Catscratch is an American animated television series created by Doug TenNapel (known for creating Earthworm Jim). It is a lighthearted adaption of TenNapel's graphic novel, Gear, which is also the name of the cats' monster truck. It aired on both Nickelodeon and Nicktoons in 2005, as well as Nickelodeon UK/Ireland in 2006.

On 2004, Doug TenNapel produced a pilot episode that featured early designs of the cats, Human Kimberly, Hovis, and Waffle's newts. The pilot's plot is unknown, but it allegedly centered on the cats going to a toy store and meeting Human Kimberly.

The entire pilot hasn't resurfaced anywhere, online or otherwise. A trailer for the pilot was uploaded onto the Slappy Pictures website on May 10th, 2006 and TenNapel's own Youtube account on November 12th, 2009.

why are pilots so commonly lost?

Because pilots normally aren't aimed at regular viewers, just TV executives who decide whether to greenlight the show's production or not. If you're lucky enough, the pilot might be salvaged for use as the show's first, or at least one of the first episodes.
