Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi (Unaired Pilot of Animated Series; 2003)

A high quality screenshot of the pilot was found by HellyeaHPAY3.

Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi was a Cartoon Network series that ran from 2004 to 2006 and was about the adventures of two rockstars named Ami and Yumi who have misadventures around the world. The series was highly popular for Cartoon Network at the time and even has a fanbase on the Internet (although very small nowadays). What most fans don't know, is that the series had a pilot created for Cartoon Network in 2003 that never aired.

After Sam Register (the creator) pitched the idea of Puffy AmiYumi having their own cartoon series on Cartoon Network, the animation studio Renegade Animation created a test pilot, in the hopes of swaying Cartoon Network to green-light the show's production.

Not a lot more is known about the original pilot, except for a few pictures and a short video of it, giving a quite different impression of the series than what would later be aired; for example, Ami and Yumi looked very different than what they did in the series. Ami in some shots had ponytails rather than buns, and Yumi had a more Grunge look to her and even having a fang stick out of her mouth; the animation was also very jerky at times.

The pilot was sent to Cartoon Network and they accepted it and it was to air on late 2003, but for unknown reasons, the pilot was reworked and later premiered on November 19, 2004. The series premiere was successful and was even at the time one of the highest rated shows to premiere on Cartoon Network.

A preview of this pilot was shown on Cartoon Network DVDs and VHS tapes in the early 2000's. It is unknown if people are in possession of copies of the pilot episode. It is possible that the creator or people involved in the making of the show may have a copy but until further footage is available, it is a mystery what the series what would have been like in its early stages.

UPDATE FEB 15 / MAR 28: A promo for the pilot has been around a month ago. You can find it here, or watch it below.

I don't know, but there's also another lost Cartoon Network pilot: Monkey See, Camping Doo, from Camp Lazlo!

Here's the information about the pilot:

Article name: Monkey See, Camping Doo (Unaired Camp Lazlo! Pilot)

Article: Camp Lazlo! is an American animated television series created by Joe Murray and produced by Cartoon Network Studios. The show revolves around Lazlo, a spider monkey who attends a Boy Scout-like summer camp with a cast of anthropomorphic animal characters. The series has a style of humor similar to Murray's previous series, Rocko's Modern Life for Nickelodeon. Camp Lazlo! The series ran on Cartoon Network from 2005 to 2008, with five seasons, 61 episodes, and an hour-long television special. During its run, the series won three Emmy Awards and three Pulcinella Awards, and was also nominated for another Emmy and an Annie Award. What most fans don't know, is that the series had a pilot created for Cartoon Network in 2004 that never aired, and Monkey See, Camping Doo was the result.

Monkey See, Camping Doo is the test pilot of Camp Lazlo!. This had the characters having their original personalities. This episode had never aired since it develops some changes to the characters. Joe Murray originally created it as a test pilot episode of Camp Lazlo for Cartoon Network in 2004. However, the episode never aired and never existed until now so "Gone Fishin' (Sort of)" became the pilot instead.

The Jelly Bean Cabin are sad because Leonard Lumpus, later named Algonquin, is sad for his failure of catching the biggest fish. They need some advice about catching fish from the nurse and the deacon but they asked questions of their own. They realize that they have to do it themselves by stealing Lumpus's super-ship. When Lumpus's ship ran out of fuel, they uses a canoe and they tricked the Jellies that they want him to help him by not talking. When Lumpus is getiing eating by a shark, they realize that they must help him and got him out of the card and caught mighty giganto fish.

  • The episode never aired and never existed until now so Gone Fishin' (Sort Of) became the pilot insted.

Differences from the TV show

  • Lazlo's appearance is similar to an actual spidermonkey and speaks with a Brazillian accent. The TV series shows him with a different design and an Americanized accent.
  • Raj speaks Americanized with a spitty noise with warrant subtitles.
  • Clam never talks because he is a mute.
  • Edward, Chip and Skip also appear. Samson never speaks.
  • Lumpus is a horse and speaks in a Don Knotts-like voice.
  • In the test pilot, Lumpus's original name is Leonard but changed to Algonquin instead.
  • Chef MsNeusli appears in the movie as the camp deacon.
