Ice Climbers (scrapped Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS character)

A tribute to the Ice Climbers

The Ice Climbers, Popo, and Nana, first debuted in the 1985 Nintendo game "Ice Climber". They appeared in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a starting fighter, and have grown to have a big fanbase, thus being included in the next game in the Smash Bros. franchise, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. However, in the newest games, Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, players have noticed the absence of the two Eskimos.

Problems

In the 2014 title, the game's director, Masahiro Sakurai, planned to have the Ice Climbers in the game. The program team had managed to get them to work in the Wii U version, but not on the 3DS. Having a character only work on one system wasn't gonna cut it, since Sakurai wanted the roster to be the same on both versions, so the Ice Climbers were cut.

Saving the Ice Climbers

Many petitions have been put up to get the Ice Climbers (or just Popo with Nana as alternative skins, like Wii Fit Trainer and Villager) back in as DLC. With the Smash Ballot created on April 1st, fans can now enter them and hope for the best.

Update: Sadly, the Ice Climbers did not win the ballot. We shouldn't have expected them to be added back, though. If the system couldn't handle them in the base game, how would it handle them as DLC?

Why is this under "Lost miscellaneous media"? It's nothing more than lost work on a video game.

I don't know... when the articles were transferred to this new site, there were a lot of categories gone missing... and other odd things...

Anyway, I fixed this.

Just checked the LMWikia article, and it's categorized like that there too, so it wasn't a screw up in the transfer process...

What I don't get is that Rosalina and Luma are a single character available on both the 3DS and the Wii U. So it's possible for two characters to be linked. So why didn't they just do the same thing with Nana and Popo?

I'm guessing it's because you don't actually control both characters. Luma follows Rosalina most of the time, and you can't move it around freely once he/she separates from her. That's just my thoughts though

Does this really warrant an article?

It's nothing lost; it was just something cut during development.

Does this even count as lost media? They're a cut character. It's not like there's some sort of beta version in Sakurai's basement with the ice climbers in it

Actually there may be haha, but since it was never meant to be available to the public it doesn't warrant an article imo.

I made a thread regarding this in the forum: http://forum...y-lost-media
