Sailor Moon (Unreleased Full DiC Soundtrack; Mid-1990s)

A few released songs from the DiC soundtrack.

During the mid 1990s, two companies, DiC and Toon Makers, were battling for the rights of the anime Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon. DiC wanted to localise it for North American syndication, while Toon Makers wanted to rework the anime series entirely, into [[Sailor Moon (Toon Makers' Live-Action/Animated Series Pilot; 1993) |their live-action/animation Americanised version]]. In the end, DiC received the rights to the first two seasons of the series.

DiC had altered several things during their tenure with Sailor Moon, such as choosing to replace the already made Japanese soundtrack with their own, in-house work. Some songs from the soundtrack did get an official CD release, like the opening theme, and several of the insert songs from the show, on the few American CDs. The rest, including transformation and battle cues, have never been released in their untouched versions.

There is currently is a petition targeted at La-la Land Records to get the complete soundtrack released.[1]

I don't know why DiC would choose to edit the music, but I think they did a good job. This music makes me nostalgic.

Probably due to a variety of factors. I remember some guy who worked on Sailor Moon dubbing wrote a book on the subject recently. That might contain a little more information.

Possibly to get more stuff to copyright. Thus $$$.

We had the same thing going on in France; localization teams would add a lot of original music to anime series, mostly with original theme songs.

And sell them as records, sometimes having their own music videos.

Yeah. I think Blümchen sang the theme song to Sailor Moon here in Germany. XD It is the catchiest thing ever, and so amazingly 90s techno.

If you want to dub a series but retain the soundtrack, you have to license the soundtrack as well, which adds more to the overall expense of bringing a series over in the first place (FUNiMATION has their own side-company that manages music licenses for their English dubs, if I remember correctly, but that wasn't nearly as commonplace in the 90's)
