SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated television series that premiered on May 1st, 1999 on Nickelodeon. The series depicts the chronicles of its title character, a child-like sponge living in the fictional city of "Bikini Bottom".

The series was a massive success and continues to air new episodes to this day, and has generated over 8 billion dollars in revenue for Nickelodeon.

Though, as with every series, there have been tons of removed content and deleted scenes, along with some unconfirmed scenes.

Reef Blower

Probably one of the more famous examples on this list, the episode "Reef Blower", which is a completely silent episode of the series (meaning it has no dialogue, just music only) was originally supposed to contain dialogue, but the audio recording equipment was damaged and the writers decided to re-write the episode into its current form to get around this setback.

It is unknown if any of the dialogue was recorded for this episode before the audio equipment was damaged.

According to the Season 1 DVD commentary, there was originally a scene in this episode that depicted Squidward naked but was cut for obvious reasons, yet Squidward has been naked in future episodes.

Nature Pants

There was once a scene showing Spongebob being nearly naked but was deleted due to nudity, yet Spongebob has been naked in other episodes and in lots of scenes in this episode.

Karate Choppers

According to the season 1 DVD commentary, this episode originally had a scene that showed Sandy Karate Chopping a fish in the groin. This scene was cut for being deemed inappropriate.

It is also noteworthy that this episode, along with the episode "SB-129" were removed from rotation sometime in the early 2000's for unknown reasons, though they have since returned.

Valentine's Day

There are rumors that the original broadcast of this episode contained a scene of SpongeBob and Sandy kissing, while others reports claim the scene was cut before ever airing. Neither claims have ever been substantiated.

Right after SpongeBob says "Hey! Mr. Krabs is getting all sweaty again!", there was a deleted scene which shows a vision of Mr. Krabs sitting atop as well as sniffing a pile of treasure.[1]

Fools in April

Originally there was a scene in this episode that showed Squidward talking to Sandy before SpongeBob does. It was removed for unknown reasons.

I Was a Teenage Gary

This episode was notorious for scaring children because of the scene that shows SpongeBob's (seemingly painful and grotesque) transformation into a snail. Interestingly, there have been rumors going around for years that in the original airing there was an extra scene that depicted Squidward's transformation as well, but was cut in re-run's for being too scary to children.

A commonly referred to a piece of evidence for this scene is that there is an odd transition placed when Squidward gets stuck with the needle, that immediately cuts to him being a snail. Some say that this is a remnant of the edit, though others disregard this as just poor transition placement.

Some say that the episode still airs in its original version in Poland, but this is pure speculation.

No consensus has ever been reached regarding this scene, being that a VHS copy of the original airing has ever surfaced there is no definitive proof for either side of the argument, and the scene remains unconfirmed to this day.

Update The Polish airing for this episode was found on a site which hosts Polish dubs of children shows and movies, and it does not contain the scene in question.

A YouTube user known as 90sGiveMeGoosebumps has uploaded onto video containing proof that this scene is fake. He insists that this is from the original airing. This is the only known proof of this scene being fake other than from Polish airing.

90sGiveMeGoosebumps' video

He also claims to have more Spongebob Season One premieres on VHS tapes.

Youtube user 90sGiveMeGoosebumps has dumped the whole premiere of Scaredy Pants/I Was A Teenage Gary onto multiple file sharing sites (Mediafire, Google Drive & MEGA). I think it's safe to say this scene is debunked.

Google Drive

Supposedly, the original airing of this episode ended with a dead fish whose shoes are being strung up. In future reruns, the scene was removed and replaced with a scene where only the dead fish's shoes are seen.

Similar to the transformation scene from "I Was a Teenage Gary", this scene remains unconfirmed, and no video evidence exists to prove it even existed.

Prehibernation Week

According to the Season 2 DVD commentary, during the scene when Sandy is raking leaves, she originally was meant to make the symbol for "Girl Power" but it was changed to "Texas". Sandy also originally did a whole dance routine when she was stepping on the leaves, but it was cut due to time constraints.

This episode also had an alternate ending that was replaced for unknown reasons, instead of SpongeBob laughing when he realized Sandy went into hibernation, he said: "Why I oughta!".

Life of Crime

During the original airing of this episode, SpongeBob said "No more getting nailed!" as Patrick was hammering a nail into his head. The line was changed to "No more getting mail!" in subsequent airings because of the sexual overtones to the joke. The scene where Patrick hammered a nail into his head was also replaced with a scene of him sucking his thumb.

The scene is lost as of today, as it can't be found anywhere online.

Christmas Who?

This episode has three deleted scenes:

  • Originally Squidward (as Santa) gave the first girl an antique instead of a wrench.
  • Mr. Krabs originally said, "And don't forget about me Pony!" While waiting for Santa.
  • After Santa (Squidward) gave the first girl her present, SpongeBob said: "I told ya he was real!".

All of these scenes were removed for reasons that so far remains unknown.

Supposedly in early airings of this episode, the bus had jellyfishers inside it. This remains unconfirmed. This could also be a case of fuzzy memories of "I Was A Teenage Gary", where SpongeBob and Patrick go to a jellyfishing convention, and a bus arrives, containing jellyfishers in it.

Welcome to the Chum Bucket

According to the Season 2 DVD commentary, there was originally a scene that showed Plankton taking out Spongebob's brain before putting it in the robot.

Patrick was originally supposed to say SpongeBob's drawing was "Lower middle class" but that line was changed to "Lacks basic construction", possibly for it being a very out of character thing for Patrick to say.

The Secret Box

Many people online claim to have seen a picture of SpongeBob with a lampshade over his head or a picture of SpongeBob in his underwear when Patrick reveals the embarrassing photo of SpongeBob during the original airing and the first re-runs.

Interestingly, the photo in the box was actually revealed in a SpongeBob book released sometime after the episode, and it seems to match the second description from above. You can see a screenshot of that photo here[1]

Wiki user Sloucher112 remembers a photo matching the first description. "It showed SpongeBob passed-out drunk on a table wearing a Christmas sweater and a lamp shade on his head surrounded by cartons of eggnog. You could also see Sandy and Squidward giggling in the background."

Graveyard Shift

In the special features of the Sponge Buddies DVD, you can find a storyboard of the episode which features a deleted scene. In the scene, it shows SpongeBob deliver mail to "Floorboard Harry". Also, Floorboard Harry was originally the one flickering the lights, not Nosferatu.[2]

Sailor Mouth

According to the Season 2 DVD commentary for this episode, there was originally a scene where SpongeBob says to Patrick "Go *dolphin noise* yourself" (Go f**k yourself) to which Patrick replies "*dolphin noise* you too!" (F**k you too!). It was cut for being inappropriate for children, despite the rest of the episode being full of dialogue similar to this. It was possible this was because it was upfront profanity instead of random nonsensical use of the dolphin noise.

There are 3 deleted scenes in this episode. These scenes aired in the U.S until 2005 when they were cut from all other airings afterwords. Some say they were cut for time and others say they were due to its content. The first scene shows SpongeBob looking out the window and seeing all his friends outside. He sees Patrick rubbing sunscreen on Sandy. The next scene right after that is SpongeBob imagining a live action car crash. The last scene was him doing calisthenics. These scenes are on the season 2 DVD, the Christmas DVD, and on YouTube. View them here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0WLYeoUgcg

The Bully

Allegedly in the original airing of this episode, there was a scene of SpongeBob and Patrick playing leapfrog while Flatts is beating him up. It was cut for unknown reasons, though it was most likely to save time.

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy IV

During an interview, Sam Henderson stated that there was once a scene involving residents of Bikini Bottom destroying furniture inside SpongeBob's head. This was cut for unknown reasons.

One Krab's Trash

During one point in the original airing of this episode, Spongebob said: "You'll never guess what I found in my pants last night! "The word "pants" was later changed to "sock" in re-runs because it sounded like Spongebob was referring to his groin.

Can You Spare a Dime?

During the scene where SpongeBob chokes Mr. Krabs near the end, Mr. Krabs eyes were originally supposed to turn red, but this was changed for being too gory.

Squilliam Returns

During another interview, Sam Henderson stated that there was originally a scene where baby Squilliam was shown to be walking while Squidward was still learning how to crawl. Henderson also said that there was also a cut scene of the two in High School, Squidward gives his date a single flower while Squilliam gives his date a full bouquet of flowers and a large box of chocolates.

Wet Painters

In the storyboard for this episode, SpongeBob says "I dedicate this crash to my old pal, Squidward" this was changed in the final version most likely because it implied that Squidward had died somehow. View it here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfMKiGxA6NU

Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy V

Supposedly, the original airing of this episode featured a plane exploding. Many believe that this was cut in subsequent re-runs because of the events of the 9/11 terror attacks in the United States.

Just One Bite

There was a cut scene near the end of this episode. During the scene, Squidward is attempting to break into the Krusty Krab, and he walks into the building he sets off their "security system" (which was a bucket of gasoline and a lit match) causing a massive explosion leaving him charred black, and doing it again when he walks into the kitchen. Some claim sequence was cut sometime during 2002 while others claim that it was cut after it's first airing for unknown reasons, and instead, the version that is currently shown on TV and on home media releases replace the scene with an awkward slide/zoom cut to Squidward in the kitchen without any burns. Although there was another edited version that retained the first but not the second gas explosion.

It is commonly assumed that the cut was made because of 9/11, however, this is false as the episode aired a month after the attacks yet the sequence was still included. This scene is still intact in Canadian airings of this episode and the VideoNow version. The scene can easily be found on YouTube.

New Student Starfish

After Patrick leaves the school, SpongeBob was supposed to say "Can I have his star?" It is unknown why this was cut. You can view the scene here. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KncgbpA41PU

Krusty Krab Training Video

In the original airing of this episode, the narrator said "Sounds like a lot of Hoopla to make over a little Krabby Patty right? Wrong!" then a fish is hit in the head with a brick. In future airings and on all DVD releases, the fish is hit in the head with a brick first, possibly so he can let the narrator finish what he was saying. The scene can be found on YouTube.

Also noteworthy is that some people claim to have heard what the secret formula was in the original airing.

The Great Snail Race

There was originally a scene that showed Sandy getting arrested for kicking SpongeBob's bottom. This scene was cut possibly to save time.

Also noteworthy is that this episode along with "Mid-Life Crustacean" are banned in Canada, as in reruns in Canada, these episodes are skipped, possibly because of animal abuse in the first segment (SpongeBob's abuse to Gary) and how the second segment makes fun of old people. They used to air in Canada a lot, but not anymore.

Chocolate with Nuts

In the original airing of this episode, there was a part with Patrick saying "I wish my nuts were chocolate" followed by him pulling out peanuts in a bag, possibly planter's peanuts. This was cut for being inappropriate.

Karate Island

There was a scene in the original airing that showed some blood on Master Udon's face after Sandy beat him up. This was removed for being said to be too violent. The dedication card at the end was removed after the Best Day Ever marathon.

  1. Sherm Cohen, a writer/storyboard supervisor, posted a storyboard of the deleted scene on his DeviantArt account, proving that it indeed exists.

Gotta say, most of this article is kind of a mess. A lot of these missing scenes are mere speculation from "original airings". If this were the case, then more people would've seen them, and there'd probably be evidence to back it up. In short, many of these seem fake and need more research. Also, I believe the Reef Blower fact to be a hoax. The episode was made that way to fit the extra 4 minutes that the original pilot didn't have to meet the standard 11 minute episode. It was silent by choice, not by circumstance.

Sorry to sound harsh, but I just want LMW to be informative, not spread rumors.

I feel like the "Nature Pants" deleted scene is a myth, and it is just confusion with "SpongeBob JunglePants" in "The Paper". http://prntscr.com/c5rlrx

Their is also a scene you forgot to show here. During the original airing of Chocolate With Nuts, Patrick at some point told SpongeBob he wish his nuts were chocolate, and took out a bag of Planter's peanuts, but was deleted due to inappropriate reasons

Lots of deleted scenes were removed from this article. Why? They shouldn't have

If something was cut in foreign airings but is still easily accessible in the native US ones (and can be easily found with a single google search), it's not lost media.

Yes I know that, but there are probably more scenes that were cut in all countries

I don't think any of those scenes were taken out of the article? In the article history there's only been one edit that removed a lot, and it left those alone

It said they were banned on Encyclopedia Spongebobia (a Spongebob wiki) and it said they are usually skipped in reruns. Though I didn't add it, my brother did.
