During shooting for the film Taxi Driver, director Martin Scorsese was at odds with the MPAA due to the film's graphic content. In particular was the now infamous final shoot out scene, in which the main character Travis Bickle (played by Robert de Niro) guns down several criminals in order to save Iris, a young prostitute (played by Jodie Foster). The film had already faced much scrutiny over casting the then underage Jodie Foster in a heavily adult film. As such, in order to avoid an 'X' rating, Scorsese and director of photography Michael Chapman heavily desaturated the color in the final scene to tone the hue of the bloodshed, giving it a more brown color.

To this day, the original unmodified scene has yet to resurface, though Martin Scorsese has gone on record as saying he prefers the desaturated look.
