During shooting for the film Taxi Driver, director Martin Scorsese was at odds with the MPAA due to the film's graphic content. In particular was the now infamous final shoot out scene, in which the main character Travis Bickle (played by Robert de Niro) guns down several criminals in order to save Iris, a young prostitute (played by Jodie Foster). The film had already faced much scrutiny over casting the then underage Jodie Foster in a heavily adult film. As such, in order to avoid an 'X' rating, Scorsese and director of photography Michael Chapman heavily desaturated the color in the final scene to tone the hue of the bloodshed, giving it a more brown color.

To this day, the original unmodified scene has yet to resurface, though Martin Scorsese has gone on record as saying he prefers the desaturated look.

Not sure if this should technically be considered "lost," per se. The scene is, as far as I'm aware, fully intact, simply colour corrected. The content of the scene is unchanged, the only think altered was the the colour timing.

The reason this article exists is because of the implication that an intact version of the unedited scene is still out there, similarly to the uncensored print of the 1986 Fist of the North Star movie. Until we have direct confirmation that the uncensored scene was or was not immediately destroyed when the edits were completed, we're treating it as if it still exists in some form.

Couldn't somebody easily edit the existing scene for the same effect?
