Status: Partially Found

Toontown Online was an MMO by Disney Interactive, online from 2003-2013. Many or all of the game's assets have been ripped from the game before it was closed; However, most if not all assets from the game's beta have since been lost. The game hadn't picked up traction yet in the beta phase, and the game was never too popular in Japan. The game's lead developer, Jesse Schell, isn't allowed to give out any of these assets, and when asked said that he didn't have any of them anymore since it had been years since they were created. Considering the niche fan community surrounding the game, these assets could have historical significance or be used in one of many fan recreations of the game.

Version Differences

Some notable assets included in the beta were old layouts of Toontown Central, clothing textures, colored gloves, and possibly even more obscure assets. The Japanese version of the game includes translated textures, possible textures and even full voice acting for the game's tutorial.

Availability

On March 27, 2019, Reddit user JawhnL5 uploaded the seemingly lost Japan localization files to r/toontown, along with the German localization. However, the beta files have yet to be found.

Many fan recreations of the game, such as the most popular of them all, Toontown Rewritten, have assets from the complete version of the Disney game. However, assets from the alpha and beta tests have not surfaced as of yet.

In recent years, more assets from the beta have been found. On June 7th, 2019, Reddit user Logan0235 uploaded what was presumably the original .ico file from beta. Around 2017-2018, a texture for the beta version of Toontown Central was found inside of the French localization's phase files. However, in 2020, Joey Zilokowski, a member of the Toontown Rewritten fan recreation, and Joe Shochet, the lead programmer for the original game, released an extremely early beta client from 2001.

In 2020, numerous leaks releating to Toontown Online's development have occcured. On June 11th, 2020, Toontown Online's 17th birthday, a member by the name satire6 released the original high quality art assets from the game.. On September 11th, 2020, satire6 released the Toontown Online source code from around 2010. Rumors have circulated about a possible CVS (Concurrent Versions System) leak in the future, that would lead to the release of every single client created for Toontown Online.
