"Rules and Regulations" and "That's What Friends are For" (lost unreleased Thomas & Friends music videos; 1990s)
Beginning with the production of the third series of Thomas & Friends in 1991, series composers Mike O'Donnell and Junior Campbell would create a series of vocal songs about the characters, world, and morals of the series that would not only be released on albums of music, but would also be featured alongside Thomas & Friends episodes in TV broadcasts and home media releases. These songs would be accompanied by music videos, which would typically consist of recycled and deleted footage from the show itself, along with footage shot specifically for the music video on occasion.
"Rules and Regulations" and "That's What Friends are For" were two songs recorded as part of the fourth series of Thomas & Friends that were initially released in the audiobook Thomas and the Best-Kept Station Competition on October 4th, 1993. The songs are respectively are about the importance of rule following and the value of friendship, and are notable for being the only songs from Mike O'Donnell and Junior Campbell's tenure as composers to not initially have music videos released for them. However, in 2014, Mike O'Donnell would confirm in a comment on his YouTube channel that official music videos for the songs had been produced alongside all the other videos for series four, but they were never released. No reason has ever been offered for why the "Rules and Regulations" music video went unreleased, but the video for "That's What Friends are For" was allegedly not released due to the sad nature of the song clashing with the tone of Thomas & Friends.
Both songs would eventually have official music videos for them posted to the Thomas & Friends YouTube channel in 2016, but these videos were newly produced, and instead consisted entirely of footage from the CGI incarnation of Thomas & Friends.[1][2] The model series era videos have never been released, and presumably lie somewhere within the archives of Mattel, the current copyright holders of Thomas & Friends. To date, numerous fan made videos for the songs are the closest to the official model videos as we have been able to get.
