Billy Bean and His Funny Machine was a puppet TV series that aired on BBC from 1954 to 1956.
It never had any VHS or DVD releases. Hence, the show has not surfaced to this day. Whether or not the show is truly lost is unknown however only one screenshot remains as visual proof of its existence.

Plot

The show involves Billy Bean (who was part of a train company) and a machine he made. He usually operated the machine with a bird named Yoo Hoo that laid an egg at random intervals.

Song Lyrics

"Billy Bean built a machine to see what it could do.

He made it out of sticks and stones, and nuts and bolts and glue.

The motor sang Chuffaty Bang, Rattata Rattatarator,

And all of a sudden a picture appeared on the funny old cartoonerator

Billy Bean built a machine to see what it would do,

It did the funniest things he'd seen,

So he called it his fun machine, machine,

Billy Bean and his fun machine."

this may be a silly question, but does anyone know what the contents of the egg laid by the bird were? i seem to remember seeing a stop motion (possibly puppeteered) short about a weird bird laying an egg that hatched into a car.... not sure where i saw it, or if i could even find it again, but it sounds like it might be part of this show.... (in all honesty tho, it couldve been a clip id seen on here for another show....)

Based on the information on that website, I would definitely love to see this found someday, but sadly, a time machine may be the only way to recover it as of now.

Are you sure it was on ITV? I remember watching and loving this programme but I don't think we had ITV until much later

I doubt ITV actually existed back then. Only BBC ITV started 22 September 1955

Forgot to mention, ITV started 22 Sept 1955. Yes, I watched it and also have (somewhere) the lead figure of Billy although the head became detached from the body. One day I'll fix it. Shame no copies of the series but there ws a cartoon srip in one of the children's comics at that time (sorry I didn't keep any of them)

Wasn't this show introduced by a very young (and very Australian) Rolf Harris?

Definitely BBC TV (only one channel in those days. I would have seen it in 1954.

I used to watch this show regularly. I think old cartoons were also shown on a screen, usually Farmer AlFalfa. In one episode, a forbidden lever was pulled and the machine changed into a garbage can, with the characters jammed inside it, looking for some way to change the machine back.

It was broadcast in America.
