Blackhat is a 2015 American action thriller film produced and directed by Michael Mann. The film was a box office bomb, earning only $19.7 million at the box office against a budget of $70 million. The film received generally mixed reviews, with criticisms focused on casting and pace. In 2016 Mann produced a director's cut of the film running at 136 minutes. It premiered once at the Brooklyn Academy of Music on February 20th, 2016; as part of a retrospective series of Mann's films.[1] It premiered on FX TV network on May 9th, 2017[2] and was available exclusively on DirecTV but it has since been removed from the service.[3]

Differences in the Director's Cut

"I wasn’t 100% happy with it. It was a challenging film to do because the ambition of the film was to an event driven narrative and develop characters within scenes, but have a very rapid narrative with rhythms imitative of how fast our world moves today in the digital information age. So this is why I intentionally had a rapidly driving plotline. But the engine of that was cyber tech so you had to track with the search for the code… which leads you on and on and on through various hacking techniques. So in moving some of the big pieces of story around I may have obfuscated [the audience] tracking the events of the basic plot." -Michael Mann

Several dialogues and scenes have been streamlined to make the film more straightforward. Moments with Nick Hathaway in jail have been shortened and a dialogue between Nick and Chen in the helicopter has been cut. There is also new scenes such as in the beginning. Instead of opening on the explosion of the nuclear plant in Hongkong, the DC starts with a hacker attack on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. The plant explosion was put moved to the middle of the film. It's speculated that the studio wasn't happy with the structure of the movie and wished for a biger threat in the beginning, however the DC makes more sense for the story and motivation of the hackers.[4]
