Her (lost original cut of romantic drama film; 2013)

Her is an American science fiction romantic drama written and directed by Spike Jonze released in 2013. The film stars Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson, Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, and Chris Pratt. The film premiered at the New York Film Festival in October 2013 and was later given a limited release in December of the same year. The film was given a wide release in January of 2014.[1] At the 86th Academy Awards, Her received 5 nominations and won the award for Best Original Screenplay. Her has received several accolades and awards and is often regarded as a hallmark of 2010's cinema.
During post-production of the film, Jonze's original cut was 150 minutes long. Jonze felt that he putting too much attention on certain subjects within the film and decided to have another director help with the editing of the film. Jonze looked at several different directors before deciding to ask Steven Soderbergh (Ocean's Eleven) to help create a new cut of the film. Within 24 hours, Soderbergh created a 90-minute cut of the film. Impressed, Jonze used the 90-minute cut to help create the final cut, which runs at 2 hours and 6 minutes. Currently, none of the cut footage has ever surfaced. The DVD and Blu-ray releases of the film, although containing three behind-the-scenes featurettes (and one on DVD), do not include any of the excised footage.[2] The script released online for the film does not contain any of the deleted scenes either.[3]
Lost Footage
According to Jonze, the cut 24 minutes of footage mainly consisted of a complicated backstory for one of the supporting characters as well as a documentary within the film starring Chris Cooper (who originally worked for Spike Jonze in Adaptation). According to Jonze, he felt a "happy pain" when cutting footage that he wasn't ready to lose.[4] Currently, there are no plans or statements from Jonze regarding if the deleted scenes will ever be released. It's unknown if they are in storage, or if they were erased in their entirety.
