Martyr (lost original version of Depeche Mode music video; 2006)
Martyr is a song recorded by Depeche Mode during the sessions for their eleventh studio album Playing the Angel. As the band thought the song did not fit on the album, it was instead included on their 2006 compilation The Best of Depeche Mode Volume 1 and released as their 45th UK single.
Swedish director Andreas Nilsson was hired to direct the music video for Martyr, reportedly because lead singer Dave Gahan was impressed with his previous work on the video for The Knife's Silent Shout. [1] The band didn't make an appearance in the video, which was being filmed in Gothenburg (at the Svenska Grammofon Studion, among other unnamed locations). No further details were made available. [2]
For unknown reasons, the video would be rejected by the band, and a different video was released in its place on the 8th of October, 2006. The video, directed by Robert Chandler, comprises of clips of earlier Depeche Mode music videos as well as live footage edited in a way to make it appear like Gahan was singing the song.
