Status Partially Found

Me and My Friends is a lost Nickelodeon pilot taped at Nickelodeon Studios in Orlando, Florida in September 1998. It was declined by Nickelodeon, though an animated pilot featuring the characters of "Me and My Friends" created in 2002 was picked up as the CGI animated series, The Backyardigans.

The only characters from The Backyardigans who appear in Me and My Friends are Uniqua, Pablo, Tyrone, and Tasha (in addition to scrapped characters called "the Meerkats"). Austin, the purple kangaroo, is absent. Some say that this may be the reason why he was referred to as "the new kangaroo on the block" by Nelvana and Nickelodeon.

The characters' appearances aren't vastly different from that of the CGI series, besides a few minor differences:

  • Uniqua has visible nostrils.
  • Pablo's propeller is yellow, as opposed to red.
  • Tyrone and Tasha's nostrils are black instead of dark yellow and dark orange. These were utilized as vision areas.
  • Tyrone's shirt has yellow/blue stripes rather than red/blue stripes.

The only known footage of Me and My Friends online is in a 5-minute compilation video created by former crew members of Nickelodeon Studios for its 10-year anniversary in 2000. There is around 3 seconds of video without the original audio. There is very little information about this pilot available, and whether or not Nickelodeon still has this remains unconfirmed.

I asked rick lyon about this here's the full details.first he stated he doesn't have it and he never saw it.

Then I asked about production:
My involvement with Me and My Friends was just as a puppeteer for one of the three meercat characters. It was was done very quickly since it wasn't for air, and I don't remember much about it except I enjoyed working with Jim and Jen on it, since they were old friends of mine already. Jim's company built the puppets.

People have claimed to have seen this pilot, and can recall details of it. Not sure whether this is real or not, but people are getting pretty specific for something that never left the studio.

Person 1: Ok I might be crazy or something, but when I first saw the Backyardigans 3d tv series the first time while channel surfing many years ago I remembered stopping to watch it for a minute and clearly thinking:

"Oh yeah THAT thing! Didn't they had a live-action version of it years before? I remember it was on a set with mascot costumes and everything..."

And the footage I'm seeing is EXACTLY what I remembered it looking like, down to whatever that pink bug-thing being off model from the 3d tv show version. That scene in the video footage has been etched in my mind for years and I've always thought I dreamed it because I never found anything about a live action series of the show before.

So I'm actually wondering if the pilot wasn't aired on tv once and I watched it for a bit before it never aired again in that form? I can't say exactly how many years ago it was, tho I remember the footage looking much more nicer and bright... Maybe there's an off chance someone taped it or something?

Either way this just confirmed a memory I had that I was sure I had made up and it's a really weird feeling.

Person 2: I remember having the same thought. I saw that live action cartoon show and I remember those weasel things were like the children that learned lessons from the backyardigan costume characters to be like good friends or something.

Mostly it was just a sing song show with little dance numbers and I remember there was a person out of costume. I think he sort of acted like the parent figure of the weasels. I remember watching and thinking what the hell in that pink thing.

The show wasn't too terrible for mid-day nickelodeon cartoon. I had three younger sisters so I ended up watching a lot of these mind numbing children cartoons. When I saw the 3d version of the show I had the same thoughts and realizing oh that pink thing was suppose to be a bug. Would have never guessed it. I thought they were going for some imaginary dragon.

I also got this impression from the pilot that the costumed characters were like a representation of children's toys coming to life. I thought that was interesting. almost this abstract representation that these toys are being played with and they are teaching you lessons through song and dance.

Another way to think of it is the show was in a lot of respect/style wise to the wiggles. you had these short interactions of the weasels and then they would cut to the backyardagians doing song and dance. the person without a full body costume would actually interact with the backyardagian characters but the weasels didn't they just watched.

I also remember the people in costumes having a somewhat difficult time with the heads. It was noticeable it mostly in the hippo and penguin. and I can't remember quite right if it was that the backyardigan characters didn't talk but just danced or if they had some sort of recording for them that wasn't quite right for them. I remember something being off with that.

There you go.

Hey everyone, this is me, the creator of #findthefriends. I've done some research and noticed that the same creator of the Backyardigans Retrospective video (I'm from Canada, think VIACOM blocked it from the US as I tried a VPN) actually saw this pilot and the CGI pilot. I believe the footage from the animated CGI pilot was actually from the same person who made the video. The creator of it has a Wiki page on the Backyardigans Wiki. I'll post a link to some extra pictures soon enough, and yes, LSSQ did choose my hashtag. Not much of an achievement, but it's great to see people use it. Rick Lyon also worked on Binyah Binyah, which you can watch on the Lost Media page. Rick Lyon played Swimpy, so that may give you a hint of what this would be like.

Can't really seem to find the picture leading to more pictures, but one was a trophy thing for the pilot of Me and My Friends. Anyways, Retrospective description. Exactly 10 years ago, one of the greatest 3D-CGI television shows in all history was created. The Backyardigans debut in the public on October 11, 2004, at 10 a.m. With realistic, well-painted locations, a variety of song genres, well-worked instrumentals, and five "make-a-great-team" neighbors, the show was a hit!

1998: - A live-action pilot, Me and My Friends, was produced, using a live-action format with full-bodied costumed characters. - Austin has not been developed yet. - 3 discarded characters, called the "Meercats", debut, puppeteered by Jim Kroupa and Avenue Q stars Rick Lyon and Jennifer Barnhart.

2001: - As the beginning of the 3D format, a pilot was created for the series. The series utilized the motion-captured animation.

2002: - After the pilot was pitched to a series, Janice Burgess, Johnny Belt, and Ronny Stringfellow worked together with Nickelodeon to conceive "The Backyardigans."

2003: - Austin was finally conceived as a character. - Nelvana was chosen to animate the series, and to become a secondary licensor.

2004: - The Backyardigans debuted to the public, with the episodes "Knights Are Brave & Strong" and "The Yeti," on October 11th, 2004.

2005: - The Backyardigans ranked 4th Most Viewed Series on Nickelodeon, and Treehouse TV in Canada. - Nelvana announces more international licensees to produce dubs of the series.

2006: - The series was announced a second season. Production began as early as 2005. - Consumer product opportunities sky-rocketed after the broadcast of Mission To Mars.

2007: - The first major special, International Super Spy, was aired, with millions of viewers. - The first live show, "Musical Playdate" debuted in Canada, the first as part of a Canadian-exclusive live series, Koba's The Backyardigans: Live on Stage! tour series. - The series began production on the third season - Leon Thomas III left the series.

2008: - Tale of the Mighty Knights, arguably the most successful special, was broadcast. - The special was so popular, it was produced a successful live show in the US. Fun fact: the costumes were designed and created by the costume designers for the 1998 pilot. - The third installment of Koba's The Backyardigans LIVE on Stage!, Quest for the Extra Ordinary Aliens, was produced for the Canadian audience.

2009: - The fourth season was greenlit, and the production began. - It was announced that Backyardigans was going to make it's last round. Production was complete late-2009. - The cast finished voicing the episodes, and voiced the recording for the third, and final installment of KobaTBLoS!, Sea Deep in Adventure. - The third special, Robot Rampage, the least successful special, was broadcast. - The show aired it's last episode, Tale of the Not-So-Nice Dragon *a sequel to Tale of the Mighty Knights*, in mid-2010.

2010: - Nick Jr. produced another theatrical production, using the costumes from Tale of the Mighty Knight LIVE!, titled "Storytime Live!", starring the Backyardigans performing Robin Hood the Clean. Characters from Dora the Explorer, Ni Hao Kai-Lan, and the Wonder Pets also starred in this production. - The singing voice cast performed I Got A Feeling [by the Black-Eyed Peas] for Nickelodeon's Mega Music Fest 2010.

According to a personal correspondence in 2012, Dave Palmer, the director of the series, announced he and Janice Burgess were writing a 10th anniversary special. This idea was most likely scrapped because, announced in a later correspondence, he forgot.
