The Rorochan suicide stream is a livestream that depicted a 14 year old Japanese streamer, who went by the username "Rorochan_1999," committing suicide by jumping to her death off of her 13th floor apartment balcony on November 24th, 2013. Many of her livestreams have been recovered and archived. Originally, only a short GIF file depicting her fall was recovered, but later on September 14th, 2020, the full livestream with audio was found.
Rorochan_1999 (ろろちゃん in Japanese) was a livestreamer born in 1999 (her official birthday is unknown, though it was believed to be January 26th.) She began streaming in 2012 on a streaming service popular in Japan called FC2 and the Japanese video-sharing service Niconico, and the majority of her early webcasts consisted of her singing, playing the piano and talking to her audience. Over time, she began participating in more dangerous stunts, such as running into traffic and standing at the edge of her apartment roof. She claimed that she wanted to become a legend on the internet, even if it meant that she died.
Final Stream and Suicide
The stream starts on November 24th, 2013, with Roro holding the camera towards the lower half of her masked face. She is seen to be in distress, and soft mumbles can be heard while she crouches inside her balcony. A distinct "I'm scared" (怖い) in Japanese can be heard. After a bit, the camera gets closer to the edge of the balcony and falls, while a faint shriek comes out of Roro. A loud "thump" is heard. The camera faces a bright light until losing connection.
Aftermath and Availability
The incident initially received little media coverage or widespread attention, beyond a local news station broadcast covering the story as well as a few articles in the newspapers. It wasn't until 2019, when the Japanese rock band Shinsei Kamattechan released an animated music video for their song "Ruru's Suicide Show" as a tribute to Rorochan, did the story gain traction on the internet once the song became popular. Since then, numerous documentary and tribute videos have been uploaded in regard to Rorochan_1999 and her story. The original footage has long since been deleted from Niconico.
On September 14th, 2020, a reddit user by the name of u/TawmanPlays shared the full livestream with audio on the r/Rorochan_1999 subreddit.
