In 2007, it was announced that actor '''Pierce Brosnan''' of ''James Bond'' fame would be taking over as narrator for ''Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends'', starting with the "The Great Discovery" special<ref>https://web.archive.org/web/20070928181954/http://www.hitnewsonline.com/releases/detail/pierce_brosnan_new_narrator_for_thomas_friends/thomas_friends</ref>. The original deal stated that Pierce was to narrate three seasons of the show and 3 DVD-exclusive specials. <ref> https://movieweb.com/pierce-brosnan-to-narrate-thomas-friends/ </ref> Although Brosnan narrated the special as planned, when season 12 premiered in 2008, the series was still narrated by Michael Angelis in the UK and Michael Brandon in the US. The reasons why Brosnan did not continue aren't fully clear, though it is often falsely rumoured that he left due to his disapproval of the twelfth season's incorporation of CGI.

Evidence has shown that Brosnan has indeed recorded dialogue for the narration. In the behind-the-scenes featurette on "The Great Discovery" DVD, Brosnan can be heard recording dialogue for the episodes "Thomas Puts the Brakes On" and "Best Friends".

In 2011, a 38-second audio clip surfaced of Pierce Brosnan's narration of "Gordon Takes a Shortcut".
