Thomas the Tank Engine (found original illustrated edition of book; 1946)
Thomas the Tank Engine is the 2nd book of The Railway Series published in 1946, and was the introduction of Thomas, arguably the series' most popular character.
When the book was first published in 1946, it had illustrations done by Reginald Payne instead of the now iconic drawings done by Clarence Reginald Dalby. Though he remained uncredited, Payne's illustrations were praised for being bolder and more eye-catching than the illustrations of the previous book. Wilbert Awdry (the creator of Thomas the Tank Engine) was very pleased with the illustrations, with the exception of certain goofs such as various point work and track inaccuracies, with said goofs being fixed in C. Reginald Dalby's revised edition in 1950. Payne was due to be brought back to do the illustrations for James the Red Engine, but he had suffered a nervous breakdown by that point, and therefore couldn't do it. The 1946 illustrations were lost for a long time, with the exception of one original illustration found by TEngine on the Thomas the Tank Engine Wiki.

On February 5th, 2017, Thomas the Tank Engine Wiki user Thomas the tank engine updated the Wiki's page on Reginald to include all the original illustrations of the book.
