Shawty Lo was an American rapper from Atlanta. He founded a hip-hop group around 2003 named D4L, and reached national status after their single "Laffy Taffy" topped the Billboard Top 100 and became certified 3x platinum.[1] He left the group around 2008 to pursue a solo career and had been releasing songs since then.

In 2013, he started production on a TV series. The name of the show was going to be called All My Babies' Mamas and was set to premiere on the women's Oxygen Network that year. It was going to be about Shawty Lo's life fathering 11 children with 10 different women.[2]

Controversy

In January, before the show was set to air, the show started getting flack from critics over its content. A petition was launched by bestselling author Sabrina Lamb. She stated that "[they] will not support any network and advertiser which exploits the plight of children and targets young women with stereotypical, dangerous, unsafe messages."[3] The show was said to have stereotypical portrayals of black families and glamorizing of premarital sex and sex with multiple partners.

Fox News made an article on it, criticizing it as well, telling Lo to "stop pretending and start being a real man."[4] Oxygen tried to distance themselves as far away from the show as possible, as the backlash against the series was starting to get bigger.[5]

The protests and boycotts succeeded, resulting in All My Babies' Mamas being cancelled in January without airing a single episode.[6]

Aftermath and Availability

Sadly, on September 21st, 2016, Shawty Lo was killed in a fatal single-car accident. It was initially described as a hit-and-run, but this was later proven wrong.[7]

No episodes of the show had surfaced up to this point, and with Shawty's death, the show has an even lower chance of surfacing. It is possible Oxygen might have some clips or episodes of the show in their archives, but due to the controversy surrounding the show and the death of its main star, they will probably never see the light of day.
