Attack of the Killer Rabbids from Outer Space (later retitled Killer Freaks from Outer Space), was a first-person shooter that was developed by Ubisoft Montpellier in 2011. The game was a horror-themed spin-off to the popular Raving Rabbids franchise and was planned to be released for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Wii U. Though it was eventually canceled and heavily rehauled into the Wii U exclusive, ZombiU.

Plot

The game was originally intended to feature a much more frightening alien “cousin” of the Rabbids (later "Freaks"), who would invade the earth and wreak havoc upon humanity.

Gameplay

The gameplay was similar to various other first-person shooters, where the player would have to kill as many Rabbids/Freaks as possible to earn points. The player would take control of one of the many soldiers sent to dispose of the Freaks and would use a variety of weapons. Such as, various firearms, an electricity gun, and a buzzsaw launcher.

There was also a multiplayer option, which could have up to 4 players.

Name Change

Though the dev team enjoyed the idea, they feared that the game was too violent and grotesque to be part of the otherwise family-oriented Raving Rabbids series.

“We thought about making them cousins to the Raving Rabbids, but quickly decided to split [it off]- This is not what Raving Rabbids is all about.”

-Jean-Karl Tupic-Bron, the game's designer.[1]

As a result, the name was changed to Killer Freaks from Outer Space, and the Freaks themselves were changed to have a more reptilian-like design. The game was revealed at E3 2011 as a launch game for the Wii U.

Cancellation

Despite the early footage getting a positive response, the team still wasn’t satisfied with the game's development. One of the major issues being that the titular Freaks were too small and hard to see, causing the players to constantly look towards the ground. The team was also having trouble with the game's fast pace, which they felt wasn't working well for the Wii U.

Because of this, the game was canceled and reworked into ZombiU, which was released on November 18th, 2012. Ports for ZombiU on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC were later released on August 18th, 2015. The trailer as shown at E3 2011, and various screenshots and concept art are available online, but the game itself has not surfaced.
