In 1988, rap duo Will Smith & DJ Jazzy Jeff released a track titled "Nightmare On My Street" based off of the classic horror film "A Nightmare on Elm Street". The song was released on vinyl and compact cassette, the video made a couple showings on MTV but was sued for copyright.

The Song

Being recorded in 1987 and released on August 1st, 1988 "Nightmare On My Street" was Will Smith & DJ Jazzy Jeff's third single. Being a smash hit and reaching #15 on the Hot 100, released on vinyl record and cassette tape. The song was considered for the fourth film of the Nightmare on Elm Street series but was later decided a no go.

The Video & The Lawsuit

During the same time the song was released the music video was recorded with Will Smith and Jazzy Jeff, being broadcast onto MTV. Unfortunately New Line sued, claiming copyright infringement, saying the video had to make critical comments or statements. That the video was purely made for entertainment purposes and not protected over fair use. All copies of the video were destroyed.
