Dr. Cravin's Formula for Great Storytelling is an educational video distributed to American elementary schools in 1999. It was meant to teach students about writing stories. It was unusual in the sense that it starred Dr. Cravin, an advertising character used by Domino's Pizza, who also funded the production of the video. Dr. Cravin was a living action figure who tried to steal Domino's pizzas as they were being delivered.

Further Information

The video is 15 minutes long and was produced by Jordan Education Media, Inc. The plot involves Dr. Cravin pursuing a pizza while simultaneously demonstrating story writing elements. TVA Media Group claims the video was shown in over 50 thousand elementary schools and seen by an estimated 5.5 million people.[1] There was also a contest, known as Domino's Pizza's Dr. Cravin Storytelling Contest, which involved third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade classes completing a story started by Dr. Cravin. The contest had state-wide competitions, and winning classes won pizza parties, with each student also receiving a Dr. Cravin action figure. More than 13,300 entries were submitted nationwide, and the student to win the grand prize got a trip for four to Walt Disney World.[2]

Status

The video was apparently available only in the VHS format. It was only distributed to schools, and was not available to the general public. It has also apparently never been uploaded to the Internet. Two copies are known to exist, however, at two different libraries in Illinois.[3]
