Ferris Buellers Day Off is a 1986 comedy film written, co-produced, and directed by John Hughes. The movie was written by Hughes in 6 days and filmed from September to November of 1985. In 2014, the film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress.

Background

John Hughes' original cut of the film was 2 hours 45 minutes with longer side plots and scenes. Hughes eventually would cut the film down to 1 hour 13 minutes. Several plot elements and scenes of dialogue were cut. Only one scene has been officially released to the public which is the extended scene with Ferris, Cameron, and Sloan in the Chez Quis restaurant ordering pancreas. However it's not the scene itself; rather a behind the scenes shot of the scene. A scene with Ferris going to a radio station in Chicago and saying he's going to be the first youth to go into space was deleted due to the Space Shuttle Challenger disaster happening earlier that year. The scene appeared in the original trailer which was to air the day after the incident and was shortly recalled. A side plot with the Volbeck family was cut due to the films time constraints. Some of the deleted scenes with Ferris' younger siblings and outtake dialogue can be seen in the films re-cut trailer.

It's believed the deleted scenes are in the Paramount vaults and in the hands of Hughes' widow.

List of deleted scenes
