Gamate (partially lost video games on Bit Corp. handheld console; 1990s)

The Gamate is a handheld console released in 1990 by Bit Corporation. The Gamate was made to compete with other handhelds such as Nintendo's Gameboy, Sega's Game Gear, Atari's Lynx, and Watara's Supervision. Initially released in Taiwan, and China, the latter being where it was known as the Super Boy, it was eventually released in several other countries, including the United States, Italy, Mexico, United Kingdom, Germany, and Switzerland. Later on in 1993, the Gamate was handed over to UMC, seemingly around the time Bit Corp. went bankrupt. Once UMC took over operation, support outside of China became very limited as they seemingly exclusively went for the Chinese market at the time.[1]
more than 60 games are known to have been released on the system, but not all of them have been preserved, some of the launch titles being clones of other games rushed out to get a sizeable library. Supposedly, there was a second generation version as well as a color version. However though, the existence of those versions have yet to be confirmed.[2]
Some Gamate games are known to have two different versions. While standard Gamate game cards are black, some light grey cartridges have shown up online. At least one of these alternate cards, "Monster Pitfall", has a distinctly different introductory demo from the regular black card. The grey cartridges are considerably more rare than their black versions. Volunteers on the MAME video game preservation project speculate that these grey cartridges are pre-release samples, but this is unconfirmed. [3]
