Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers is a 1989 slasher horror film. It is the fifth installment in the Halloween franchise, and the second in the Thorn Trilogy.

MPAA Censorship

Around the time of its release, the MPAA was heavily censoring violent films, demanding constant re-cuts to allow for the film to receive an R rating. Other films suffering from this restraint include Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood and Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III, with the former having many lost scenes of its own.

Original Opening

The Shape's unconscious body was originally found by an occult member, named Dr. Death, played by Theron Read, who would then have proceeded to carry him into a cave, where he would perform an incantation ritual, raising The Shape from the dead, before being killed. Actor Don Shanks claims this scene's removal was requested by series producer Moustapha Akkad, being disturbed by the occult material featured.[1] This is the only cut scene from the film known to have any viewable footage, being a small clip from behind-the-scenes content.

Uncut Violence

Prolonged shots of violence were either shortened or cut entirely to appease film censors. Through careless editing, possible lost sequences can be deduced, and some scene's existence is proven as they were described or mentioned by those involved in the film's production, and include the following:

  • Mikey's body begins to twitch on the ground after being stabbed in the head with a gardening tool and lingered on for less time than originally shot. [Scream Factory's October 2021 release's 'deleted gore' bonus feature contains the missing ~1 second of cut twitching].
  • There was a filmed, somewhat long series of scenes in which Michael Myers arrives at the Children's Hospital (that Jamie & Billy snuck out of right before), and proceeds to kill an entire SWAT team that are outside, guarding the building. Don Shanks (the actor who played Michael Myers) mentions in an episode of 'Horror's Hallowed Grounds' to the program's host Sean Clark that the first SWAT member is talking on a radio when Michael comes up behind him, breaks his neck, spinning his head around 180°, pushes him to the ground, then stomps on his head, pushing it deeper & deeper into the ground, all while there is blood coming from his eyes, nose, etc. After this kill, another SWAT member charges at Michael with an M16, which Michael wrestles the gun out of his hand and proceeds to shove or 'stab' [presumably the barrel of the gun] through the SWAT member's head. After this, Michael proceeds to "kill the rest of the SWAT team" but it is not mentioned how they were killed or how many more members there were.[2] There exists 2 photos regarding this scene. After the Horror's Hallowed Grounds episode, the actor who played this SWAT member, Jon Platten, saw that there was interest in this series of kills that didn't make it to the film, and took to Facebook to share some behind-the-scenes shots and information, in which he posted 2 photos regarding his character's death. One is a shot of him, with bloody makeup on, with his "backwards" costume on (to make it look like his head was backwards from Michael spinning it around), and the other of him with his head partially in the ground, as they applied more makeup to his face.[3][4]
  • Police Deputy Eddy's death has a continuity error where glass shards are seen piercing his face even though the execution of the scene up to that point implies otherwise. This scene is confirmed to have been filmed as behind-the-scenes footage from Drew Cummings' 1998 "The Making Of: Halloween 5" shows the recording of the original on-screen death scene in which Michael Myers punches through the driver-side window of the police cruiser, grabs the Deputy's head, and smashes it into side of the driver-side door. Greg Nicotero, the SFX lead, explains how the scene was going to use a 'jump-cut' in which Michael would raise the Deputy's head back up after the fake glass and makeup was applied, and then proceeds to show the filming of Michael Myers smashing the Deputy's head several more times into the door. This footage only exists in VHS quality, and it is behind-the-scenes footage, not the actual filming camera's footage, therefore it is still unreleased/lost.[5]
  • Billy is seen limping after nearly being hit by Michael Myers behind the wheel, suggesting there was an impact of unknown magnitude shot, though this has never been confirmed, nor mentioned by any of the actors.
  • Tina's death had an alternative shot, which may have been more bloody. [Scream Factory's October 2021 release's 'deleted gore' bonus feature contains ~1 second of this alternative shot, but the film is damaged in the lower half of the frame, making the actual stab not visible, meaning it is unknown if it was more bloody or not, but the scene was still included as it showed the stab from a slightly alternate angle. It is unknown if there are any missing frames before or after the included shot, as there is no entry or removal of the knife shown in the footage].
  • In the tense laundry chute scene, Michael Myers is seen stabbing into said passage with Jamie inside. She is seen crawling out of the intake on the floor above with a vertical stab wound spanning a great span of her leg, which was not shown to have happened. [Scream Factory's October 2021 release's 'deleted gore' bonus feature contains ~1 second of Jamie's leg gushing blood as Michael's knife pierces through both the laundry shoot & her leg; however there is no footage of the blade entering or being removed from her leg, and it is unknown if said footage exists, or if they had only used jump-cuts].
  • A slightly alternative ending was filmed in which the shootout at the police station that Michael Myers was being held at was shown on-screen, [presumably] showing the death of at least 2 officers, and showing the death of Sheriff Ben Meeker on-screen. Rob Draper, the director of photography for the film, stated in an interview for the Taking Shape book that there was "a great handheld shot through this long corridor in the police station, while the shootout was unfolding". An issue of Fangoria shows 2 stills, one featuring two of the officers presumably killed in the shootout, as well as a shot of Sheriff Ben Meeker falling to his death after being shot in the chest. These scenes were never shown, but are said to have been filmed as per Rob Draper's interview.[6][7][8]
  • One change rumored to have existed was footage of Michael Myers with burn makeup near the ending. The story says that the producers, impressed by concept art, gave the cosmetics team a choice to either apply grotesque burn marks to Michael's face, mirroring his immolation at the end of Halloween II (1981), or forgo the effort by obscuring his face in shadow, like in the final film. Unless the team's decision to favor the former was overruled before shooting, this scene may not be real, and there is no official statement on said scene(s).

Rediscovery

In 2019, photos of master tapes were published online by HalloweenMovies.com, with sites such as Bloody Disgusting interpreting it as news to come. In August 2021, it was announced that it was Shout Factory that found the master tapes to the film and would include scenes from the uncut version on their release of the film which was released on October 5th, 2021.[9][10] Although this release did release a 28-second bonus feature of deleted gore, there is only ~12-13 seconds of footage, with no audio, some improper framing, and one scene being damaged enough that the new footage doesn't even show anything new.
