Legend of the Galactic Heroes is a Japanese science fiction novel series written by Yoshiki Tanaka that was published between 1982 and 1987. An animated adaptation consisting of theatrical films and direct-to-video releases was produced by Kitty Films between 1988 and 2000. In 2015, the Houston, Texas-based Sentai Filmworks had acquired the rights to the release the series of anime adaptations in North America for the first time.[1]

A much earlier attempt was made to bring the franchise to the English world. In the late 90s, Legend of the Galactic Heroes rights owner Tokuma Shoten hired Outis Productions to help sell the series to broadcasters in the United States. Based on episodes 51 and 52, The Battle of Vermilion parts one and two, of the direct-to-video series, a pilot was recorded by Ocean Productions in Vancouver, British Columbia. It was screened at Anime Expo 2000, Sakuracon 2000 and Anime Central 2000.[2] Voice actor Michael Dobson lists himself as a principal cast member on his resume.[3]

In 2014, YouTube user trancemassacre uploaded a four minute clip allegedly from the pilot.
