Lizzie McGuire was an American revival show based on the original Disney Channel series of the same name that originally aired between 2001-2004. It was slated to premiere on Disney+, however, the showrunner had left in January of 2020. It was officially canceled in December 2020 due to significant creative differences.

Background

The revival was announced on August 29th, 2019, and that it would be released on Disney+.[1] It was going to come from the series original creator Terri Minksy, who had recently signed a new deal with the Disney Channel. She was set to create a range of different movies and projects for Disney. Hilary Duff was set to reprise her role and also serve as executive producer as well as Rachel Winter and Ranada Shepard as co-executive producer. In October, Jake Thomas, Robert Carradine, and Hallie Todd were announced as returning to the respective characters. Filming began on 29th October 2019.[2]

Plot

The series would have followed Lizzie as a 30-year-old apprentice to an interior decorator and living in an apartment in NYC, as well as being engaged to a man who owns a restaurant in Soho. Due to receiving significant news, she would have been forced to return to LA.

Cancellation

Terri Minksy departed the show in January of 2020 as a result of creative differences with Disney.[3] Production on the series was halted after two episodes were filmed. In February, Duff stated that it had halted because Disney has deemed it not family-friendly.[4] Disney had stated that the series was still in development. Duff publicly stated that she wanted to have the series moved to Hulu.[5] In April of 2020, Duff stated that she was in contact with the writers of the series.[6] But in December, the series had been officially canceled.[7]

Availability

Since the revival's cancellation, no footage or plot details has ever been released from the completed episodes. It's unlikely Disney will release the completed episodes due to not being satisfied with the mature content.
