Mighty No. 9: The Animated Series was a planned animated series based on the video game of the same name. Annouced in 2014, the animated series was apart of an ever bigger plan for the Might No. 9 franchise.[1] Due to the commercial failure of the video game Mighty No. 9 stopped all other Mighty No. 9 related projects, including the animated series.
Background
On August 31, 2013, a Kickstarter was launched by Mega Man series creator Keiji Inafune for a spiritual successor to the Mega Man series titled Might No. 9. The Kickstarter campaign asked $900,000 in backing to have the game developed for PC and released on Steam. If the campaign for Mighty No. 9 reached $2.5 Million, the game would be ported to consoles with a 2015 release date.[2]
The Animated Series
As the campaign reached its goals, plans for other Mighty No. 9 projects were in the works. Plans called for a live action adaptation, an anime, a manga, and an animated series. The only one of these projects that came close was the animated series. On July 5, 2014, at Anime Expo 2014, a teaser trailer was revealed for the Might No. 9 animated series. The animated series was planned for a 2016 release date to coincide with the game's launch. Mighty No. 9: The Animated Series was in development with Japanese based studio Digital Frontier and was aimed for kids ages 6-11. During the time of its announcement, Mighty No. 9: The animated series no network or streaming service had agreed to air the series.[3]
Synopsis
Like other cartoon series based on video game, the plot for Mighty No. 9: The Animated Series would not follow the game's plot. On Mighty No. 9: The Animated Series website a Synopsis of the show was posted and stated: Half human, half robot, all Mighty
In the year 2099, humans have become dependent on robots not just for manual labor but also entertainment. The most powerful robots in the world fight in front of humans in a popular league called the Battle Colosseum.
BECK is a small combat robot made to fight in the Battle Coliseum as a part of the MIGHTY NUMBERS, the strongest robots in the world. But since Beck is the only robot in the world with a human heart, he's also the only robot that gets scared in combat. The good news is that he also possesses the ability to turn into any other robot. The bad news is that since his emotions are wired to his abilities, he often finds himself malfunctioning in battle.
One day a notorious engineer named DR. BLACKWELL releases a virus that infects every robot in the world...everyone except Beck. Dr. Blackwell remotely controls the infected Mighty Numbers to lead a rebellion to destroy mankind. Beck suddenly becomes the only robot available to stop the Mighty Numbers.
As Beck tries to save the world, he will be joined by CALL, his overly serious robotic sidekick; DR. WHITE, the young but socially inept creator of the Mighty Numbers; and DR. SANDA, the lazy but wise team leader. With each of their help, Beck will learn how to deal with his emotions and become the hero they need him to be.[4]
Cancellation
After Mighty No. 9 released to largely mixed reviews, this jeopardized future plans for a full franchise. The development for the animated series stayed quite after its initial 2014 announcement and did not air in 2016 as originally planned. It is possible that development for the series stopped before the release.
