O Direito de Nascer (literally The Right of Being Born) is a Brazilian soap opera that aired on TV Tupi and TV Rio. It had 160 30-minutes-long episodes that were exhibited from Monday to Friday, being premiered on December 7th, 1964, and ending on August 30th, 1965.

It was written by Thalma de Oliveira and Teixeira Filho as an adaptation of the Cuban radioplay with the same name by Félix Caignet. It was considered the first great classic of Brazilian teledrama.[1]

Plot

The plot takes place in Cuba in the early 20th century. Maria Helena, daughter of Don Rafael Zomora de Juncal, one of the richest men in Havana, falls in love with Alfredo Martins, whose family is the rival of the Juncal family, and gets pregnant. Alfredo tries to convince Maria Helena to make an abortion but she refuses. When Albertinho is born, Dolores takes him out of the city, because his life was menaced by Don Rafael. While Maria Helena goes to a monastery, Dolores educates Albertinho, who becomes a doctor and falls in love with Isabel Cristina.[2]

Status

In spite of being a popular soap opera in the early '60s, today none of the original 1964 version episodes can be found on television or the Internet.
