John Hughes with actor Matthew Broderick during the filming of Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Status: Lost

Oil and Vinegar was a screenplay written by John Hughes most likely between the years of 1984 to 1986. Matthew Broderick, who had immense success playing the main character in Hughes' previous film, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, would have been casted as the traveling salesman. Molly Ringwald, who had played in three of Hughes' films prior, would have played the hitchhiking new wave girl. The film would have focused on the conversation between these two characters, who after the salesman picks up the girl they talk about their lives when crossing into the age of an adult. Trapped by themselves out in the middle of nowhere in Broderick's car, later a motel room, it would focus on the same experimental feeling of The Breakfast Club. Though instead of five characters in a large setting, it would only be two in very minimal environments. Creative differences with the studio, along with the set director, led the screenplay to eventually be shelved indefinitely. Though it was supposedly Hughes' favorite piece he had written, there isn't a shred to be shown online.
