On February 14, 2018, 19-year-old Nikolas Jacob Cruz walked into his former high school, Stoneman Douglas High School, in Parkland, Florida. Carrying with him an AR-15, he walked over to the nearest fire alarm and activated it. Once students walked out into the hallways, he opened fire on them. The shooting ended after 6 minutes, after which Cruz attempted to flee the scene. He was caught after 40 minutes. 17 students died,[1] along with 17 others injured, marking it the deadliest high school shooting in modern American history since the Columbine High School shooting on April 20th, 1999.
CCTV Footage
Many surveillance cameras were operating on the day of the shooting. Exterior cameras captured the police response. Interior cameras captured the massacre unfolding. Of the many video recordings, only 6 has been released to the public so far. The first edited video shows Scot Peterson, the school resource officer, responding to the shooting. It was petitioned by the public to get the footage released[2] The remaining 26 minutes shows that he never entered the school. About 5 months later, additional outside security footage was released. Including video from the main gate, walkways, and parking lot. While this is still an active criminal investigation, and more exterior CCTV footage is most likely to be released, video from inside the school will likely never see the light of day. As the public never asked for the footage [3]
