Before FUNimation Entertainment attempted to market '''''Crayon Shin-chan''''' in the US in 2006-2011 (with their dub lasting three seasons and 78 episodes), a previous attempt at an English adaptation had been in existence.

The first dub, produced through 2001-2002 by Vitello Productions and Lacey Production, shortened the "Vitello dub". Shortened to just '''''"Shin Chan"''''' (as the later dubs would be), this version was never aired in the US, but did air in the UK through 2002-2003 on their version of Fox Kids. The dub was later relegated to only shorts on Jetix, but the show was fully removed from the channel after Jetix rebranded to Disney XD. It also aired on Fox Kids in Australia and on RTÉ in the Republic of Ireland. This dub contained many famous voice actors that had done work in Western animation, such as Grey DeLisle (who had her first voice acting role in it). Although the dub was [http://crayonshinchan.wikia.com/wiki/Vitello_and_Phuuz_dubs heavily censored and localized], Shin Chan's infamous Buri Buri dance was still in the show.

Crayon Shin-chan was first dubbed into English by Vitello Productions in Burbank, California through 2001–2002, when TV Asahi and Lacey Entertainment decided to market the series worldwide. This dub is referred to by fans as the the "Vitello dub". Shortened to just '''''"Shin Chan"''''' (as the later dubs would be), this version was never aired in the US, but it did air in the United Kingdom from April 2002 through to 2003 on their version of Fox Kids. The dub was later relegated to only air as shorts on Jetix as a slot-filler between other programs, but the show was fully removed from the channel after Jetix rebranded to Disney XD in 2009.

52 episodes that included 156 segments (episodes lasted 21 minutes and included 3 segments of 5 to 7 minutes) have been produced of the Vitello dub. 125 complete segments of the dub have been found in English, and of 4 segments only a part have been found in English. 60 segments of the Vitello dub were released on Region 4 (Australia) DVDs, but they are now all out of print. All DVDs except Volume 4, which contains one completely and one partly missing segment, have been found and uploaded.

It premiered in Israel, also subtitled, in June 2004, on the Telemania block on Arutz HaYeladim, later moving to the newly-formed Telemanga block in 2006, running until the block's closure in 2009.<ref>[https://he.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D7%98%D7%9C%D7%9E%D7%90%D7%A0%D7%99%D7%94]</ref>

In 2004, Phuuz Entertainment gained the license to the series and produced a new English adaptation, featuring a different pool of Los Angeles-based voice actors. None of this dub was ever released on DVD, and none segments have appeared on the internet. At least 78 episodes (234 segments) have been produced of the Phuuz dub, of 36 segments the English name is known. This dub was pitched to Adult Swim in 2005, but was rejected on basis of it sounding too "childish" for the block. After Phuuz's license expired, FUNimation acquired the rights and their dub was approved. In 2003-2004, Phuuz Entertainment and Media Concepts gained the license to the series and produced a new season of the English adaptation, being commissioned by Lacey Entertainment to continue in similar style as the Vitello dub, featuring a different pool of Los Angeles-based voice actors known for anime. None of this dub was ever released on DVD, and no segments have appeared on the internet. 52 episodes (156 segments) have been produced of the Phuuz dub, of 147 segments the English name is known. This dub was pitched to Adult Swim in 2005 but was rejected on basis of it sounding too "childish" for the block. Fox Kids Europe and Jetix Europe Channels B.V. - a British and Dutch media company located in Hilversum (The Netherlands) and London (United Kingdom) - is a media company that oversaw the dubbing and distribution of European dubs based on the Vitello and Phuuz dubs. In 2003 the company was owned by The Walt Disney Company and to a lesser extent by a famous Dutch media tycoon.

The Danish, Dutch, French, German, Greek, Italian, Polish, Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, and Latin American Spanish dubs of the series used the Vitello dub as the source for their dubbing. Of these the Italian and Polish dubs did not continue from the Phuuz dub afterwards. It is not known whether or not the Danish or Greek dubs continued, but the series proved to be popular worldwide.

==Vitello Productions dub (Season 1 and Season 2)==

The order of the episodes Vitello released is not the chronological order aired in Japan. For example, in episode 29, Shin brings his classmates to visit his newborn sister. All segments available were found by the same source on Fox Kids in the UK unless stated otherwise. However, some episodes appear to be sourced from second-generation tapes.

It is possible some episodes were skipped by Fox Kids in the UK. For example, episode 20 is not available from a VHS rip on the channel. The Polish dub carries over the same censorship from the UK, which is also missing episode 20. It is the only foreign dub based on Vitello's dub to use this censorship.

|Little Bigboss Plays Golf||<span style="color:orange;">'''Partially Lost'''</span> (censored)||Around a minute of the episode was cut on Fox Kids in the UK, with multiple splices made at the end.<ref>At the beginning, a shot is cut short to remove one of Shin's lines, and around a minute later some of his dialogue with Cosmo is cut. For 35 seconds in the middle, Shin pulling down his pants and putting a golf club between his buttocks is cut, skipping to Cosmo getting his golf ball stuck in the sandpit, with some dialogue cut once he tries to get it out. All scenes at the end of the episode featuring Shin using a golf club held between his buttocks are cut. Some later footage of Cosmo and Mort is also placed between two of Cosmo's earlier shots, the second being muted with some of the dialogue from Mort being placed over it. One shot is cut short and the last three shots are deleted or missing, resulting in the removal of one line and the loss of the final line.</ref> The full episode is available in Dutch, French, German, Brazilian Portuguese, and Latin American Spanish.

==Phuuz Entertainment dub (Season 3)==

+
52 episodes (156 segments) have been produced of the Phuuz dub. Of [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Crayon_Shin-chan_episodes 147 segments the English name is known]. The other segments' names are from the German dub, which translated the Phuuz dub. The [http://planete-jeunesse.com/fiche-1826-shin-chan.html French dub], the [https://dublagem.fandom.com/wiki/Crayon_Shin-Chan Brazilian Portuguese dub], the [https://doblaje.fandom.com/es/wiki/Crayon_Shin-chan Latin American Spanish dub], and the [https://animesuperhero.com/forums/threads/old-international-fox-kids-jetix-channels-memorial-thread.5404801/post-84587481 Dutch dub] translated the same number of episodes. A limited number of episodes are also available from the Brazilian Portuguese, European Portuguese, and Latin American Spanish dubs, which included English title cards, with some of the same known segments. It is commonly believed that Phuuz dubbed 78 episodes, but there is enough evidence in the presentation of the episodes to support the conclusion that the German version dubbed an additional 26 episodes between Vitello's episodes and Phuuz's episodes. 52 episodes is also a standard number for syndication.

The European Portugese dub (a translation of the Vitello dub and later the Phuuz dub) kept the title cards in English, therefore the English names of some missing fragments of the Phuuz dub are known.

The Danish dub, the Greek dub, the Polish dub, the Brazilian Portuguese dub, the European Portuguese dub, and the Latin American Spanish dub (translations of the Vitello dub) left the title cards in English, therefore the English names of missing segments of the Vitello dub are known. Most of these dubs do not have missing episodes found, so the statement mostly applies to only the Latin American Spanish dub and sometimes the Brazilian Portuguese dub.

The Latin American Spanish dub, the Brazilian Portuguese dub, and the European Portuguese dub (translations of the Vitello dub and later the Phuuz dub) left the title cards in English, therefore the English names of some missing segments of the Phuuz dub (50 from European Portuguese, 9 from Latin American Spanish and an additional 2 from Brazilian Portuguese)  are known. However, some titles documented on Wikipedia aren't currently available (or were once available, in the case of 8 European Portuguese segments) for viewing online in any of these dubs, suggesting the existence of unpreserved recordings. It is likely the titles, added in early 2020 from a Chilean IP address, were seen in reruns of the Latin American Spanish dub, which were happening at the time on ETC in Chile.

A thread on the Kametsu forum provided most episodes in English, which were recorded from Fox Kids in the UK. An account was required for access, but unfortunately the thread no longer exists.

Before FUNimation Entertainment attempted to market Crayon Shin-chan in the US in 2006-2011 (with their dub lasting three seasons and 78 episodes), a previous attempt at an English adaptation had been in existence.

Crayon Shin-chan was first dubbed into English by Vitello Productions in Burbank, California through 2001–2002, when TV Asahi and Lacey Entertainment decided to market the series worldwide. This dub is referred to by fans as the the "Vitello dub". Shortened to just "Shin Chan" (as the later dubs would be), this version was never aired in the US, but it did air in the United Kingdom from April 2002 through to 2003 on their version of Fox Kids. The dub was later relegated to only air as shorts on Jetix as a slot-filler between other programs, but the show was fully removed from the channel after Jetix rebranded to Disney XD in 2009.

It also aired on Fox Kids[1] in Australia in June 2003, and on Fox8 in the former Fox8 Kids block once the Fox Kids channel shut down in 2004. Outside of Fox, it aired on RTÉ2[2] in the Republic of Ireland as part of the defunct original version of The Den from January 2003 until 2005, and on the now-defunct Channel i[3][4] during 2004 in Singapore. The official Japanese series website also states that it aired in New Zealand beginning in July 2005, but the channel it aired on is unknown. The dub made its debut in Iceland in subtitled form[5] in January 2003, and aired until 2008 on the former Barnatími block (now known since 2016 to the present as Barnaefni) on Stöð 2[6]. It premiered in Israel, also subtitled, in June 2004, on the Telemania block on Arutz HaYeladim, later moving to the newly-formed Telemanga block in 2006, running until the block's closure in 2009.[7]

This dub contained many famous veteran voice actors that had done work in Western animation. Although the dub was heavily censored and localized, Shin-chan's infamous Buri Buri dance was still in the show. Text edits were also made, along with a new soundtrack. The theme song was composed by John Loeffler and John Siegler, of Pokémon fame.

52 episodes that included 156 segments (episodes lasted 21 minutes and included 3 segments of 5 to 7 minutes) have been produced of the Vitello dub. 128 complete segments of the dub have been found in English, and of 3 segments only a part have been found in English. 60 segments of the Vitello dub were released on Region 4 (Australian) DVDs, which have been uploaded.

After Phuuz's license expired, FUNimation acquired the rights and their dub was approved. Another English dub that was closer to the original was commissioned by LUK Internacional in 2015 and released in 2016.

Vitello Productions dub (Season 1 and Season 2)[edit | edit source]

52 episodes that included 156 segments (episodes lasted 21 minutes and included 3 segments of 5 to 7 minutes) have been produced of the Vitello dub. 128 complete segments of the dub have been found in English, and only a part of 'Playing Tag', 'I Jump-Start the Baby' and 'The Tortoise and the Hare-Bags' have been found in English.

The order of the episodes Vitello released is not the chronological order aired in Japan. For example, in episode 29, Shin brings his classmates to visit his newborn sister. Episode 30 features the baby coming home from her birth in the hospital. In episode 52, it was revealed that Shin was going to have a little sister.

Phuuz Entertainment dub (Season 3)[edit | edit source]

52 episodes (156 segments) have been produced of the Phuuz dub. Of 147 segments the English name is known. The other segments' names are from the German dub, which translated the Phuuz dub. The French dub, the Brazilian Portuguese dub, the Latin American Spanish dub, and the Dutch dub translated the same number of episodes.

There is no footage of the Phuuz dub available in English, only three audio files:

  8. At the beginning, a shot is cut short to remove one of Shin's lines, and around a minute later some of his dialogue with Cosmo is cut. One shot is cut short and the last three shots are deleted or missing, resulting in the removal of one line and the loss of the final line.
