Sonic Cafe was a mobile game service provided by Sega, beginning on January 26, 2001. The service cost 315 yen per month, and users would be able to download as many games as they wanted. The service hosted mobile games from Sega franchises such as Puyo Puyo, Phantasy Star, Samba de Amigo, and Sonic the Hedgehog, alongside original games.
On December 1, 2007, the Sonic Cafe was relaunched as Puyo Puyo! Sega. However, not every game was carried over to the new service.
Sonic Cafe's western equivalent was Sega Mobile, which released Sega mobile games in North America and Europe. Some Sonic Cafe games were released through this service and have been dumped.
Sonic Cafe's games were for NTT DoCoMo's FOMA and i-mode services. The end of both services was announced in October 2019, with the application deadline for signing up for either of them being in the same month. Currently, there is no way to sign up for these phone plans to gain access to any of these games. Internet connectivity for these services will cease on March 31, 2026, effectively ending distribution on any remaining games.[1]
