Summary

Spell Up was a WebGL HTML5 web game and a Chrome Experiment that utilised Google Speech Recognition that was made by Google in 2014. The game was available in Desktop and Mobile versions of Google Chrome. It used Google account to save progress. In the game, the word was dictated and the player needed to spell that word letter-by-letter using their microphone or use a keyboard if microphone was unavailable. If the word was spelled correctly, it was added to a "tower" on the screen and the player would earn some coins. If one letter of the word was spelled wrong, it destroyed the "tower". The player could use hints: dictionary that telled what the dictated word means, alphabet letters spelling, Google translated version of the word or paid powerups that required coins.[1][2]

Chrome App

In the same year Spell Up Chrome App was released. It worked as a shortcut, opening Spell Up website when opened. It was removed from Chrome Web Store in 2016-2017. The store extension page was not archived. [3]

Availability

The game worked until end of December 2018, when Google shut it down, and its website, spellup.withgoogle.com now redirecting users to Google home page. Wayback Machine partially saved the website, but most files were not saved, making the archived website only show the background image.[4]
