SpongeBob (Re-Hydrated) is a short based on SpongeBob SquarePants that aired on Nicktoons in 2003. It spans about 30 seconds and was created by animators at AWE Games as a parody of The Matrix Reloaded. The 3D character models in the short are the same ones used in the cutscenes of the PC video game Operation Krabby Patty, which AWE Games also produced.

Plot

The short is made in the style of a teaser trailer. It begins with the words "He is...the one" and cuts to SpongeBob. He is dressed as Neo from The Matrix and fights an army of Patrick Star clones dressed as Agent Smith.

Finding

On 25 January 2016, a still from the short was posted to a /co/ thread.[1] Users on the board eventually uncovered a Nicktoons promo bumper[2] from 2003 that featured a scene from the short.

On 16 August 2016, a demo reel from one of the AWE Games employees (Goopy Rossi) was found on Vimeo.[3] It included the entire 30-second short. A YouTuber with the username The VHS Guy uploaded footage of the short without sound.[4]

Later in November 2016, Em50 uploaded the footage above with sound from the demo reel. It is a generic music track that Goopy Rossi added to his demo reel and is not the original audio. [5]

On 15 April 2017, users on Wikia emailed Gossman, one of the cutscene animators credited on Operation Krabby Patty and Employee of the Month. Gossman confirmed that the short only lasted 30 seconds, rather than 10 minutes as was previously believed, and was made as a parody trailer. He also confirmed that Em50's upload includes all of the footage.[6]

On the same day, Wikians requested for Gossman to make a blog post on Encyclopedia SpongeBobia regarding the short. He answered questions about it on the wiki for an hour. During these conversations, he confirmed that it was made to be aired as part of the Nicktoons channel's continuity in 2003. He also confirmed that the short originally had sound effects and a different music track.[6]
