The movie is notable from its deviation of how the ''Mario'' canon was later developed, particularly in the presence of original characters such as Peach's fiancée Prince Haru (in contrast to the games, in which Peach has no other love interest outside Mario). While Peach and Bowser resemble Yoichi Kotabe's redesigns for the Japanese ''Mario 2'', Luigi's design differs slightly from how he later looked in ''Mario 3'' (as well as the U.S. version of ''Mario 2'').

On February 20, 2018, in a post on the Lost Levels forum, user Carnivol revealed that the year prior he had acquired a 16mm print of the film, detailing his intent to eventually restore and release it to the public. He says that the reason he broke his silence about it is because, as a veteran working on projects for this specific movie for over ten years, he was looking for input and motivation to continue the task, which suddenly moved "into a new project structured around a 250gb++ project size, rather than the old project which was roughly 10gb."<ref>[http://forums.lostlevels.org/viewtopic.php?t=3546 Carnivol's Full Lost Levels Thread] Retrieved 16 Apr '22</ref>

For the time being, Carnivol decided to take on the monumental task of restoring the film himself, however he could. He tinkered with the project for the next few years, eventually releasing a WIP of his work onto YouTube on July 20, 2021.<ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8J_b8lUajy4 Super Mario Bros. - The Great Rescue of Princess Peach (4K - 16mm scan - WIP - No color correction)]</ref> In the video description and on Twitter, it was revealed that film scanning and restoration group FemboyFilms, which previously gained attention for their cancelled 8mm restoration of Daicon III, would take charge to complete the project.<ref>[https://twitter.com/carnivol/status/1417522867814682624 Carnivol's reply to a Tweet confirming FemboyFilms would work on the restoration] Retrieved 16 Apr '22</ref>

FemboyFilms worked to restore the film from Carnivol's original 16mm scans, but would not mention their involvement publicly until they posted a Tweet on March 18, 2022, hinting that it was in the works.<ref>[https://twitter.com/FemboyFilms/status/1504870888885260290?s=20&t=zyGwDzH-jOHwJ9cluz49LA Tweet hinting at FemboyFilms' Progress] Retrieved 16 Apr '22</ref> On April 1, 2022, they posted a trailer for their restoration on YouTube.<ref>[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ddISs879MN0 Super Mario Bros. - The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach! The plot of the film is about Mario and Luigi finding their way to the Mushroom Kingdom from a Warp Pipe after Princess Peach jumped out of their Famicom game. They then later found out that King Koopa had escaped the Famicom game too, and kidnapped Princess Peach. She must be saved by the two plumbers. In order to rescue her, the two must find the three powerups as follow: the Super Mushroom, the Fire Flower, and the Invincibility Star. Along the way, the brothers run into several enemies such as Goombas, Bloopers, Pirahna Plants, Lakitu, and much more. The duo arrives just in time to save Peach from a forced marriage to Bowser and defeat him by twirling Bowser by the tail and throwing him (this idea would be later recycled into ''Super Mario 64'''s Bowser battles). Peach thanks Mario for saving her (as well as for saving a prince, who, it turns out, had been put under a spell by Bowser to be transformed into a blue dog) and the two return home, promising to visit again soon. The movie ends with Bowser and his underlings now employed by Mario and Luigi in their grocery store.

Super Mario Bros.: Peach-hime Kyūshutsu Dai Sakusen! (which translates to The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!) is a 1986 anime film which was only released in Japan. It was produced by Nippon Television and Grouper Productions in order to promote the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2 (later released as Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels in the west). The theatrical screening was shown alongside a video strategy guide for the game titled Super Mario Bros. 2 Kanzen Kōryakuhō (The Complete Strategy Guide), hosted by Jimmy Kobayashi.

The movie is notable from its deviation of how the Mario series was later developed, particularly in the presence of original characters such as Peach's fiancée Prince Haru (in contrast to the games, in which Peach has no other love interest outside Mario or Luigi). While Peach and Bowser resemble Yoichi Kotabe's redesigns for the Japanese Mario 2, Luigi's design differs slightly from how he later looked in Mario 3 (as well as the U.S. version of Mario 2).
