The Fire Within (originally Le Feu Follet) is a 1963 French film directed by Louis Malle, based on the novel Will O' the Wisp by Pierre Drieu La Rochelle. The film revolves around the last hours in the life of a suicidal alcoholic as he tries to find a reason to live[1]. It is often considered one of Louis Malle's most successful films.
The Soundtrack
Throughout the film, extracts of Eric Satie's Gymnopedie No. 1, 2, 3 and Gnossienne No. 1, 2, 3 can be heard in various scenes. The score is performed by Claude Helffer and it might have been specifically used for the film, as the pace of the soundtrack is distinctively slow. Barclay Records released the incomplete soundtrack on vinyl, without Gymnopedie No. 2 and 3. At one point, the soundtrack was sold on sites like cdandlp.com[2] and Amazon.com[3]. However, it is no longer on sale as of today. No more physical copy of the vinyl has been known to resurface. No digital copy of the pieces is seen on the internet.
