Status: Partially Found

The Goodnight Show is a TV show that plays between other shows on Sprout (now known as Universal Kids) that aired between 2005-2017 with six seasons produced and approximately 20-26 episodes per season with the first episode airing September 26th, 2005, and ended when Sprout switched to Universal Kids in 2017. The hosts were Nina and Star from 2006-2017.

Premise

The Good Night Show features a variety of segments. Some of the segments were removed or modified in the later seasons for various reasons.

The first segment usually begins with nina and star introducing themselves to the audience, sing a short song, and in seasons 3/4 the goodnight bell would ring and reach inside the goodnight basket to find a clue that the hosts and audience guess what tonight's adventure will be about, but in seasons 5/6 they removed this element of surprise and just got straight to the topic of the episode, and in every episode they translate a word to spanish

The second segment involves a different form of constellations as Nina and Star look at the sky with their telescope, and will usually have nighttime birthday remainders from The Sunny Side up Show.

The third segment features an animated game titled Lucy, Light the Way!, where Lucy, a firefly puppet, (who introduces the shows that come between the block), will light up and viewers need to guess where Lucy is.

The fourth segment involves a different craft based on the day’s theme. The crafts were removed in November 2011, and were replaced by the Sandy Story segment, where Nina would tell a story and draw the pictures in the sand.

In Seasons 3-4 one of the segments involves Nina spinning a moonbeam wheel, landing on a color, but in season 5 it was revamped to show pictures of the game instead, and playing a goodnight game, but this segment may have been completely removed for the 6th and final season of the show.

Another Segment of the show involves asking kids a question based on the theme of the episode and hearing there responses, in seasons 3/4 nina asked the question, but this was completely revamped in seasons 5/6 where Star goes out into the Goodnight Garden and has a conversation with several childern And in another segment usually involves Nina and several childern doing a different yoga stretch based on the theme of the episode.

In Seasons 5/6 The quarter-final segment deals with cleaning up, where Nina and Star put up a musical number to sing and clean up the treehouse

The final segment involves Star brushing his teeth, washing up and going to sleep, then right after Nina encourage viewers to give their wishes to Hush, their pet goldfish, with a poem and the goodnight song, Before or after that, Sprout friends sleeping to the iconic Pajanimals song La-La-Lullaby. The Pajanimals song was removed in 2016.

And there are also inbetween segments of just nina and star discussing stuff based on the episodes topic, and also a sign language segment.

Periodicity they would do live episodes like The 2011 Halloween episode, The 2009 Mothers Day episode or the 2014 Space Episode when Astroblast first premiered,

On the 6th and final season of The Good Night Show, Award-winning actor, activist and artist Esai Morales who is best known for being in the biopic La Bamba, Lt. Tony Rodriguez on NYPD Blue, Camino del Rio in the Netflix original series Ozark, and in the HBO series The Brink, joined the cast and played the role of Nina's Uncle known as Tio Javier in several episodes, but since season 6 is nearly completely lost it is currently unknown which episodes he appeared in.[1][2][3]

History

In September 2005, in a joint venture between Comcast, NBCUniversal, PBS, and HIT Entertainment/Sesame Workshop, PBS Kids Sprout was launched on Comcast and later other cable/satellite providers. The 3rd and the final host was Nina aka Michele Lepe and stayed host until 2017.

Season 3 premiered on December 18th 2006, Season 4 premiered on a monday sometime in mid-late 2009, and season 5 may have started airing as early as November 7th 2011 which changed to the treehouse theme, dropped the crafts segment in favor of the sandy stories segment, and star's puppet design was changed, when the slightly tweaked version of season 5 premiered on August 27th 2012, star's puppet was changed for a second time and lucy the firefly is now only seen in her fully animated form for the rest of the show's run, and season 6 premiered on Monday July 27th 2015, the treehouse theme was tweaked again, nina's best day ever book is now an element of the show they use to tie into the episode's theme, and nina's uncle is finally revealed for the first time in several episodes.

Hosts/Cast

  • Nina, played by Michele Lepe, debuted as the permanent host on December 18th, 2006. and was the most popular host with audiences, She did crafts, translated words into spanish, did ASL sign languague, narrated and drew pictures in the sandy story segments, etc. and Michele (as Nina) guest-hosted The Sunny Side up Show in 2014.
  • Star, a star-shaped puppet, portrayed by Stacia Newcomb, was the show's co-host. Star served as the child character of the show, asking questions about the evening's theme, commenting to Nina about the segment (such as the Good-Night Game), or encouraging viewers to follow him as he performed nighttime routines such as brushing his teeth or reading a bedtime story. Star debuted shortly before the departure of the program's original host, "Melanie." His puppet was updated on November 7th, 2011 and again on August 27th, 2012. He appeared as a character in the prequel Nina's World, living with Nina, even though Star accompanied Melanie and Leo prior to Nina's arrival.
  • Lucy The Firefly who was originally a firefly puppet in seasons 2-4 then completely animated in Seasons 5 and 6 used to introduce show segments. She was also featured in games in animated form, such as "Lucy Light the Way"; in this game, viewers were shown parts of a picture (as though they were illuminated by a firefly's light) and then guessed what the picture represented, In Seasons 5/6 She was also used in animated form to help find constellations in the night time sky, and her puppet was updated in mid-2009. She also appears as a character in the prequel Nina's World, living with Nina, even though she was introduced alongside Leo before Nina arrived.
  • Hush was a real-life goldfish who was originally used to introduce show segments. He appeared at the end of every show, with Nina closing the show by saying goodnight and reciting a poem in which viewers were encouraged to "make a wish." He appears in the prequel Nina's World living with Nina as a child even though he began with Melanie.

Availability

While it was popular when it Aired on the Sprout channel, there are only a few episodes available and many clips for some partially found or mostly lost episodes on YouTube and Archive.org. Only one DVD has been released and there is currently not any digital release. Between 2009-2012, Sprout used to release podcasts which were clips of there shows that got released on iTunes, the Sprout Player App on IOS devices, and a website called digitalpodcast.com, but the app has been deleted and the podcasts were removed from iTunes and the files were revoked from the website. There were also clips of the show that were found on Sprout Online, but the site no longer exists. A YouTube user by the name of PBSKIDSSprout had uploaded clips from The Good Night Show and other shows that aired on Sprout, but when they moved youtube channels to a channel called Sprout, now known as Universal Kids Preschool, all videos on the old channel were made private and only a few Uploads remain on the current channel for this particular show. Also allegedly, for a short amount of time clips/episodes from the show were on the Google Play Store.[4][5][6][7][8][9]

  • A few segments that would have aired in the TV version like birthday reminders and the goodnight gallery were intentionally removed for various reasons and if any episodes were officially digitally released in the future they would not include those segments, but the Goodnight Game segment that is part of every episode is missing from DVD & Digital re-releases for unknown reasons.
