The Phantom of the Opera is a 1962 British horror film directed by Terence Fisher, a loose adaptation on the 1910 novel Le Fantôme de l'Opéra by Gaston Leroux. The film was made by Hammer Film Productions and stars Herbert Lom as the titular Phantom, Heather Sears as Christine, Michael Gough as Lord Ambrose D'Arcy, and Edward de Souza as Harry Hunter.

When the film had its American TV premiere on NBC, new scenes were added which lengthened the film's runtime from 84 minutes to 98 minutes. A subplot was created involving a pair of Scotland Yard police inspectors on the trail of the Phantom. These characters were Police Inspector Ward and Police Inspector Dawson, played by Liam Redmond and John Maddison respectively. The two looked at and discussed artifacts relating to the case that were on display at Scotland Yard's Black Museum.[1] Another new scene involved the attempted murder of the mistress of Lord Ambrose D'Arcy. None of this additional footage was shot by Hammer, nor did they have any input. It was created by Universal Studios. Though the original version of the film is readily available on home video, the new scenes have not seen the light of day since they aired (more recent television airings of the film have omitted them). It is very possible that old VHS recordings with the scenes exist, but none appear to have been uploaded by anyone to the internet thus far.
