Ushiro was a planned horror-RPG game developed by Level-5 for PlayStation Portable and mobile phones, first announced in September 2008 for release in 2009 during the Level-5 Vision press conference and through an issue of Famitsu.[1][2][3] The game would tell the story of Reiichiro Ushiro, a shinigami spirit with the power to give a person one single wish in exchange for their lives.

At the 2008 Tokyo Game Show, Level-5 released a trailer and screenshots for the PSP version of the game, which were later given on DVD to attendees.[4] The anime cutscenes were produced by frequent Level-5 collaborator OLM Digital.[3] No information about the mobile version was shared and Level-5 never formally spoke of the game again. In early 2010, Ushiro's website was deleted and the project was presumed to be cancelled.[5]

In 2014, Level-5's CEO, Akihiro Hino, said the company was considering "new developments" for Ushiro.[6] Later that year, a light novel series written by Liu Goto was published by Kadokawa and Fields.[7] In 2015, a manga adaptation began serialization in Web Newtype and Gekkan Heroes.[8]

During the Level-5 Official Broadcast SP Part 2 live stream hosted on July 20th, 2016, the company highlighted the game during their look back at Level-5's history, unveiling some previously unseen pieces of production art and the HD version of the 2008 trailer.[9][10] Hino confirmed the company would not be moving forward with the franchise.

Despite all of this, the PSP version of the game regularly appears on Famitsu's Most Wanted reader polls as late as 2017.[11][12][13]

Gameplay

In terms of gameplay, Reiichiro would have been able to control and possess people, seeing the lives of strangers, and battling the personifications of the evils in people's hearts.
