Youkaiden Nekome Kozou (妖怪伝 猫目小僧) or Cat Eyed Boy is a Japanese anime series that was broadcasted in 1976. The anime is the adaptation of the manga series Nekome Kozou, penned by Umezu Kazuo, an author famous for his horror manga. Youkaiden Nekome Kozou was made using a technique known as gekimation. This animation technique consists in filming paper cutouts moving in real time through a scenery to create an illusion of movement. Besides the anime adaptation, the manga series also spawned a live action movie in 2006.
Plot
The story is about a boy named Nekome Kozou, a half-human, half-demon who is rejected by both the demons and the humans. Tragedies are bound to happen wherever he goes, but he still tries to help the innocent and ensure that the villains will get their punishment.[1]
Broadcast
The series ran from April 6, 1976 to September 30, 1976 on Tokyo 12 Channel, in the timeslot of 19:00～19:30, on Thursdays.[2]
Availability
Currently, only episodes 1-10, 23-25 have been found and are available on YouTube. Searching by the japanese name of the series ("猫目小僧") is the best way to find the episodes there. The first 10 episodes can be found in Drinking Yogurt’s channel, and the last 3 are available in 発掘太郎's channel. Drinking Yogurt’s been known to post episodes sparingly for the past 2 years, but they never replied to anyone who asked if they had the entire series. Currently, it's been 4 months since posting episode 10, but the longest time interval between posting 2 episodes so far has been of 5 months. Episode 3 "対決！！うらみの地むぐり" can also be found on Niconico.
The first 12 episodes have been released in VHS and the entire series has been released in a LD Box in the early 90s. The first 3 episodes are also available in the DVD of the live action movie that was released in 2006. The full anime series has never been released in DVD.
List of Episodes
There are 25 episodes in total, but some less reliable sources, like Wikipedia, only lists 24 episodes (episode 21 "妖木こだま" seems to be the one missing from the list). Episode 5 "なみだ婆と泣き男" and episode 6 "哀れ 浜ドクロ" aired again on August 26, 1976 and September 23, 1976 respectively.[3]
