Yume Nikki (ゆめにっき) is an exploration game created by KIKIYAMA in 2004 using RPG Maker 2003. The player controls a "hikikomori" (very asocial shut-in person) named Madotsuki and explores her dreams. Through a nexus, the player can enter 12 doors that lead to different worlds. The player may interact with characters and objects to gain effects. The objective of the game is to collect all 24 effects that are scattered throughout the dream world and place the effect eggs in the nexus.

From June 26, 2004 to December 17th, 2005, ten demos of the game were released.[1] These demos are now incredibly difficult to find, and they are sought after by fans of the game. Gameplay footage of some demos can be found on YouTube and NicoNico.

One issue of a Japanese magazine called “FreeGameStation! Vol.1″ included a bonus DVD, which was said to include either information about version 0.06, or a playable version of the demo itself. However, this has not been confirmed, and due to the magazine's high prices on auction sites, no definitive answer has been found one way or the other. Another magazine, entitled "フリーウェア年鑑2005", actually did include a beta version of the game (version 0.04). Twitter user dssorcerer_atu obtained a copy this magazine on July 3, 2015, and confirmed that the demo was real.[2] After hosting some streams of the gameplay on USTREAM, fans requested him to distribute the demo, to which he declined.[3]

On July 25, 2017, a Spanish YouTuber by the name of Eloy: Yume Nikki Fangamer posted a video[4] announcing that the FreeGameStation! Vol. 1 magazine was found at an auction and was obtained by his group of friends. They confirmed that the magazine's DVD contained version 0.06. On the same day, Eloy streamed a playthrough of the game and uploaded the download link afterwards.

Shortly afterwards, some Japanese users told Eloy that uploading the 0.06 demo was likely illegal, and so he took the link down. However, some users re-uploaded the demo.[5]
