Out of the Box (partially lost Playhouse Disney children's series; 1998-2004)
Out Of The Box is a children's television series that aired on Disney Channel from 1998 through 2004. The show was based on the works of Douglas Love and took place in "The Box," where the show's two hosts, Tony and Vivian, would have kids from the neighborhood video and do various activities, including craft-making, singing and performing plays.
Availability
The show had at least 79 episodes spread across 3 seasons, but only two of them, "Happy Holidays"[1] and "Halloween," [2] were released to home video. There were two VHS releases: the first was of the episode "Happy Holidays," and the second release had the episode "Halloween" on it. In addition, "Halloween" was released on the DVD Rolie Polie Olie: A Spookie Ookie Halloween and The Book Of Pooh: Just Say Boo![3] as a bonus feature. Besides this, 11 other episodes have been found in full, alongside clips of "Revealing Feelings."
On October 14th, 2019, it was confirmed that the show would be among the TV shows featured on Disney's new streaming service Disney+ which launches on November 12th, 2019.[4]
Possible Missing Episodes
For a brief time in late 1999 (while season 2 was premiering), three episode titles, “Let’s Eat Out”, “The Gift” and “Treasures” appeared in listings for the show. These titles weren’t used for any of the episodes shown in regular rotation, and none of the episodes on Disney+ have these titles.
According to the U.S. Copyright Database, however, there are gaps in the show’s production order where these titles would fit in. Specifically, the gaps appear in the first season, despite the titles only appearing during season 2’s run.
Based on the titles, it appears these were early versions of certain season two episodes. Further evidence of their existence comes from a clip shown in the opening for the first two seasons that isn’t from any of the regular episode and also doesn’t appear to have been filmed for the opening (see gallery below).
However, whether these rough versions of the more familiar season 2 storyline were actually aired is disputable. Firstly, there are conflicting sources in Newspapers.com about whether “The Gift” or “Unicornicopia” was the episode aired on 12/4/99. In addition to this, various sources on Newspapers.com claim that “The Gift” and “Treasures” aired on October 6 and 10 of 1999, respectively—-rather than “Unicornicopia” and “Tooth or Consequences” premiering on those dates, as the U.S. Copyright Database and Disney+ both say. So until a recording proving is found proving that the episodes were aired, it can be assumed that the inclusion of the titles was a misprint.
Episode List
See "possible missing episodes" for further information on episodes 6, 21 and 22.
On November 12th, 2019, Disney+ made the whole show available (aside from episodes 6, 21, and 22) on its streaming service on its launch day.[5]
