The Moment of Truth is a 2008 gameshow where contestants answer 50 questions by a polygraph examiner, probing questionable and unethical truths about the contestants. 21 of the questions are chosen to be answered on set with the contestant’s family or close friends while the 39 questions get more personal and questionable if you could answer it or not.
The first season was nearly pulled due to controversy from a contestant who seemed heartless and careless about what would happen to her husband’s marriage and feelings. The top prize was $500,000 and only one contestant won the prize named Melanie Williams, a contestant who lived a polygamist lifestyle in the polygamist community, experiencing sexual abuse from her community.
The Episode
In her appearance in the episode "Season 2, Episode 9", she admitted the truth to not just herself, but to her family and the community. Some of the questions she admitted yes to was:
- her father set her up on a date with a 73-year-old
- her experience impacted and made her fearful of relationships with men
- the polygamist community giving alcohol to underaged minors
In the episode "Season 2, Episode 10", the last question she got was if she suspected her father had sexual relations with a minor while he was an adult. Tearfully, she said yes and won the $500,000. The situation heavily burdened to Melanie and her family was very uncomfortable because her family is unsure how to approach her afterward and Melanie was reportedly reluctant to hug her family afterward[1]
