Clerks: Sell Out was a planned animated direct-to-DVD film. The film was to be animated by Powerhouse Animation and produced by Clerks creator Kevin Smith.
Plot
The basic plot of the film was only released during planning. It was meant to be about the "clerks", Dante Hicks and Randal Graves, selling out and making a film on their lives working at the Quick-Stop.
Production
Shortly after the cancellation of Clerks: The Animated Series, Kevin Smith announced plans to create a direct-to-DVD film based off the series. In September of 2003, Powerhouse animation was asked to create test footage for the film, which had been titled Clerks: Sell Out.[1] The test footage premiered at WizardWorld Dallas in 2004.
It is unknown whether anything other than the test footage was made during production.
After the announcement, the film had several delays before production went silent. It was later explained that the film was unable to be made following Harvey and Bob Weinstein's split from Miramax, Clerks production company. Because of the split, the rights were also split between Disney, the company that owned Miramax at the time, and the rights of Clerks: The Animated Series went to Disney. This made them unable to use the animated series story or format.
The last mention of the production was from Smith himself stating.
"You will see a Jay & Silent bob before Clerks: Sell Out"
The plot of Clerks: Sell Out would eventually become the plot of Clerks 3[2] that was filmed in August 2021[3][4] and is expected to be released in July 2022[5].
