Most recently in the special ''SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout'', created to celebrate the shows 20 year anniversary, in the scene where the tour guide is stating the rules while SpongeBob and Patrick break them, one of the rules is no bad language followed by SpongeBob and Patrick swearing. It is unknown if any of these have anything after removing the censorship however it is still possible.

The episode's title card.

Status: Lost

"Sailor Mouth" was an episode of the animated show SpongeBob SquarePants which first aired in 2001. It was controversial with parents groups due to the characters' (censored) swearing.[1]

Synopsis

The episode revolved around SpongeBob and Patrick adding curse words (censored with dolphin sounds) to sentences. After Squidward tells Mr. Krabs, he tries to stop them, but in the end, he says every curse word that there is. SpongeBob and Patrick run to Krabs' mother's house to tell on Krabs, but they all start cursing when explaining the situation to Mrs. Krabs. They all are forced to paint her house.

Uncensored Version

Tom Kenny has stated that they were told to use substitute words; however, they found it too difficult so they had to ask Nickelodeon if they could actually swear so that they could find it easier. He also stated that audio clips of the characters SpongeBob, Patrick, Mr. Krabs and Squidward swearing do actually exist, but they are buried deep in the archives of Nickelodeon. Rodger Bumpass also confirmed the existence of the uncensored version at LA Comic Con 2021.

Availability

While no verified clips of the uncensored version have surfaced, some people have tried to sentence mix the episode or dub over them to include the actual words. The cast of the show have used curse words in interviews and in their other roles.

In a 2024 Q&A with the Art of Spongebob Discord server, Paul Tibbitt revealed that he at one point owned a VHS copy of the uncensored episode, but is not sure of the current whereabouts of the tape.

Later in the year, a couple of voice clips would surface that were supposedly from a leak of various Nickelodeon production files.[2] Given the lack of word from any official sources on the clips' legitimacy and the suspected possible use of artificial intelligence, it is currently unknown whether these clips are real or not.

Other Media Featuring Censorship

Future episodes, games and movies have used dolphin censors. In the PC version of The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, The name David Hasselhoff was censored because they most likely did not get permission to use his name.

The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water also features swearing in the ending rap battle most likely to give the illusion that it's an actual rap battle.

Most recently in the special SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout, created to celebrate the show's 20-year anniversary, in the scene where the tour guide is stating the rules while SpongeBob and Patrick break them, one of the rules is no bad language followed by SpongeBob and Patrick swearing. It is unknown if any of these have anything after removing the censorship however it is still possible.
