Uncle Gus For the Love of Monkeys.png

The title card for the first pilot.

Status: Partially Found

Uncle Gus is the name of two cartoon pilots created by Lincoln Peirce (creator of Big Nate) for Cartoon Network. The first pilot, titled "For the Love of Monkeys", aired on Cartoon Network in 2000, and a second pilot, "Not So Fast!", aired in 2001. Neither one of these pilots has resurfaced in English, but both have been found in Latin Spanish.

History

"For the Love of Monkeys"

Uncle Gus premiered its first episode, "For the Love of Monkeys", on July 14, 2000, as part of the Cartoon Cartoon Fridays special event titled The Big Pick. During the event, which ran from June 9 to August 11, 2000, Cartoon Network showcased a new cartoon pilot every Friday night on CCF, and viewers were encouraged to go to CartoonNetwork.com to cast their votes for which pilot should become a full series.

The June 9 airing also marked the first time that the CCF block would be hosted by a Cartoon Cartoon character, that being Eustace from Courage the Cowardly Dog. Eustace would host for a second time on July 14, the day that "For the Love of Monkeys" premiered. From August 25 to August 27, the ten featured pilots re-aired as part of a 53-hour marathon titled Cartoon Cartoon Weekend. The winning pilot was "Meet the Reaper", which would be turned into Grim & Evil and later The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy.

The character Uncle Gus appears as a playable character alongside three other Big Pick characters in the online Shockwave game Cartoon Cartoon Summer Resort on CartoonNetwork.com.[1] "For the Love of Monkeys" re-aired as part of The Cartoon Cartoon Show on December 14, 2002.[2]

The original English version of "For the Love of Monkeys" has not resurfaced; however, a Latin Spanish dub was found online (see "Gallery" below). A CCF promo for the CCF broadcast is available on YouTube.[3] An undated CCF promo from 2000 featuring Uncle Gus is also available on YouTube.[4]

"Not So Fast!"

Another episode, "Not So Fast!", aired on Cartoon Network's Cartoon Cartoon Fridays the following year on November 23, 2001.[5] That night's block was hosted by Mojo Jojo of The Powerpuff Girls (with Blossom and Courage from Courage the Cowardly Dog as co-hosts). This pilot also resurfaced online in Latin Spanish (see "Gallery" below).

Later shorts

A later pilot by Pierce for Cartoon Network, Spang Ho!,[6] is available online in its complete form.

A third Uncle Gus short was produced, according to Peirce in an interview[7]. However, it is unknown if it even made it aired on Cartoon Network or where it is as of now, as no other information about it. A claim from an anonymous user says that it is on YouTube in Greek, but the claim is unconfirmed and has false properties.
