"Friends in Low Places" is a country song first released by Garth Brooks. The song reached #1 on the Hot Country Songs, won awards from the Academy of Country Music and Country Music Association as the best country single of 1990, and has became one of the most iconic songs of its genre.
==Background==
"Friends in Low places" was composed by Bud Lee and Dewayne Blackwell in 1989. The initial line, "I got friends in low places," came from a statement made by Bud while reassuring friends that he could afford the check resulting from their meal at an eatery. Lee and Dewayne were captivated by the line and conceptualize basing a song upon it. The song was conceived during their attendance of a songwriter's party months afterwards.
The duo meet Brooks while he was an unknown musician working as a shoe salesman; at this time, Brooks was preparing to release his first album. After learning of his musical hobby, the duo would begin frequently recruit him to sing lead vocals when producing new demos.
Brooks would form an obsession with "Friends in Low Places," stating in interviews that he wished he could've recorded it for his first album. Brooks, hoping to Foster the song until the release of his next album, ''No Fences'', would question Dewayne and Bud concerning if they were fine with leaving the song to him:
<blockquote>"I asked Bud Lee and Dewayne if I could hold on to it and, without a blink of an eye, they both said yes. Putting that kind of faith into an unknown artist is unheard of. Thanks Dewayne and Bud for believing in me."
