Irmão do Jorel is a Brazilian animated series created by Juliano Enrico that premiered on Cartoon Network Brazil in September 22, 2014. The series follows the life of Irmão do Jorel, a little boy with curly hair who is always overshadowed by his beautiful older brother Jorel. The series was first conceived as a comic in 2002 and later turned into an animated series.

Three years before the series began airing, a seven-minute pilot episode was created to sell the show to the network. As of now, the episode was only aired in a couple special events and never fully released to the public, but a few small clips were shown in some videos or teasers. [1]. In November 2, 2015, the episode was adapted into an episode of the final series titled O Pequeno Mestre do Gi-Gitsu, albeit with several changes. Due to the episode's existence, most of the pilot's story can be known.

Plot

The episode starts with Irmão do Jorel quietly entering his house by tiptoeing, with a visible black eye.[2] Meanwhile, his family is distracted admiring Jorel's newest trophy with pride, apparently not noticing the little boy.[3] However, his best friend Lara yells, from the outside of the house, for him not to let anybody know he got hit at school. Irmão do Jorel, embarrassed and desperated, attempts to cover his bruise up by making up a strange lie, which nobody believes.

From the living room, Vovó Gigi calls her grandson to explain to him the correct way to defend himself; she reveals that, in her youth, she was a huge fighter and trained several masters such as renowned actor Steve Magal, being an specialist in her own martial art of "Gi-Gitsu". A training montage ensues, where Irmão do Jorel is put into varied trials to test his agility and strength.[4]

The following day, Irmão do Jorel heads to school, wearing dark glasses to cover up his black eye, along with carrying his Steve Magal lunchbox and wearing a black hoodie. He then meets his bully; Samantha, a huge, green, monstrous girl with blonde pigtails. She attempts to punch Irmão do Jorel in the face once again, but he dodges and hits her nose instead, pulling a big hairy booger out. It turns out that, in doing so, he unblocked a "cuteness gland" inside Samantha's nose, making her much nicer as a result. Steve Magal himself shows up at the school to congratulate Irmão do Jorel for his skill at "Gi-Gitsu".

The credits scene features Irmão do Jorel frenetically singing what seems to be his show's theme song along with the band "Cuecas em Chamas", formed by his oldest brother Nico, the vocalist Carlos Felino, and keytar player Reginaldo.[5] This scene was reused in a promo, except it was edited to feature only Irmão do Jorel in the scene.

History

The storyline for the test episode was conceived by Juliano as far back as 2008 at least; while the series hadn't been greenlit yet, he has already posted three images representing events of the episode. The first image, posted on the leap day February 29, 2008, features Irmão do Jorel massaging his grandmother Gigi's disgusting feet while trying to look away, as part of the Gi-Gitsu training.[6] The second image, posted on May 17, 2009, has Irmão do Jorel coming to school to confront his bully, who at the time was meant to be a bald buff boy, only a bit taller than him.[7] The third image was posted in May 18, 2009 and is the first chronologically out of the three; it has Irmão do Jorel coming back to his house with a huge black eye, in front of Vovó Gigi who's seen smoking a cigarette. [8]

In early 2011, Juliano Enrico and his team transformed the idea into a seven-minute pilot episode.[9] The episode was shown during two animation conferences, but was never released to the general public.
