Album cover for Barenaked Ladies' "Everything to everyone"

Status: Partially Found

"Sign Me Up" is an unreleased song by Canadian band, Barenaked Ladies. It was recorded in 2003 for their album "Everything to Everyone", however was left off the album and subsequently never released in any form. The song is currently only available online as a live version, which is in poor quality.

"Sign Me Up" was described as "basically us swearing our heads off for six minutes[1]" by Ed Robertson on the official BNL blog page. The song was also recorded completely naked as tradition, every BNL album up to that point had a song recorded nude[2]. There exists photos of this recording session.[3][4]

Blog post from Ed Robertson:

"Jeez. We were working so hard we almost forgot to do a naked track… almost! We finished up the beds with a little number called “Sign Me Up”. Ron thinks it’s a single. For the life of me, I don’t understand how. It’s essentially a funk groove with us swearing our heads off for 6 mins. The kind of thing that you’d see us do in between songs in a show, but WAY more offensive. This is the stuff we’d sing in the dressing room to make each other laugh. You know, the good old 11 year old boy stuff. Mostly centered around our balls and the like. It was fun. Ron chickened out, and didn’t get naked. The engineer Eric was a team player though, and Tiny got in on the action as well. Tiny snapped a bunch of photos, so I’ll post a couple when I have them. Family shots only… Naked family shots[1]!"

Additional infomation

  • "Sign Me Up" was the last BNL track recorded nude. Other naked tracks include "Humour of the Situation", "Alcohol", "Back", "Life, in a Nutshell" and "King of Bedside Manor".
  • "Sign Me Up" is not the only lost track from the "Everything to Everyone" recording sessions in 2003. "Statue of Los Angeles" was a song written by keyboardist Kevin Hearn, and was left off the album. However a recorded solo version exsists on the album "The Miracle Mile" by Kevin Hearn & Thin Buckle. The version recorded by the full band, however, is lost/unreleased. You can hear the band talking about this song in a video titled "Picking the Songs[5]", which was posted on the band's official site. This video is now accessible on the fansite BNLarchive.com.
