Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch was a shoujo anime based on a manga by Michiko Yokote that originally ran its first season in Japan from April 5, 2003 to March 27, 2004.

In June 2004, ADV Films announced their acquisition of the license for both the first season and the at the time currently airing second season (Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch Pure), with the intention of turning the show into a popular children's franchise in North America.

ADV dubbed the entire first season of the show, pitching it to various children's networks (likely Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network), who ended up "re-evaluating the market" and passing on the show. As ADV felt that releasing a 51-episode anime aimed at children without any sort of associated television deal wouldn't be profitable, they dropped the license.

According to multiple sources, ADV's English dub is currently being held by TV Aichi, the original broadcaster for the anime in Japan.

It is believed that both the Spanish and the French dub of Pichi Pichi Pitch were based off the English dub; as such, it is likely that the dubbing companies in these countries hold copies of the English dub. (The original broadcast of the Spanish dub actually used the English opening that ADV created for the series.)
