Sonia Roco is a widow of the late Senator (1992–2001), 1998 and 2004 presidential candidate, and Education Secretary (2001–2002) Raul Roco, who died on August 5, 2005 because of Prostate Cancer. In 2007, Roco announcing her bid under Roco's party Aksyon Demokratiko as a senator as part of the opposition coalition named Genuine Opposition (GO).

In the May 14, 2007 senatorial elections, Roco failed to elect in the senate with 8,457,748 votes, and it is defeated by other candidates of the Genuine Opposition. An election ad was aired in the same year, that featured Sonia herself and the archive footage of Raul Roco.
